Are you like me, falling asleep in the chair over and over, eventually saying “Ahh? To hell with it ,I am going to bed” You drag yourself down the hall to your bedroom, put on your pajamas if you wear them, turn out the light and hop into bed, snuggle up to your pillow making snorting sounds and gently close your eyes. The sheets are cool upon your skin and you make a sigh at the end of an exhausting day and wait for sleep to overtake your mind. Ahhhhh!
You notice that a few things start coming into your mind and you throw them around wondering what you are going to do about them when you find that you are wide awake, both eyes jammed open and your brain doing laps around the bedroom. Why?! What has happened to you since the time when you wanted to go to bed until now? Is it because you had that micro sleep before or is it your worries that are still driving on inside your head have overtaken your body keeping sleep at bay.
We have all been there, but how do you fix this annoying trend that seems to happen night after night leaving you depleted of energy especially when the alarm goes off at 5am in the morning and you are supposed to put on your superman outfit and plunge out into the morning to conquer all obstacles in your path. If you are any thing like me you just fall over them landing on your rear end and find that there is no energy left in the old workhorse to do anything.

Are you out without any Clout?
To be realistic, we have to look at our life style first and find out some of the things we have in our life that are making it impossible to sleep at night.
1. Have you any unfinished business that you have brought home with you that is making it impossible for you to sleep?
2. Have you had a couple of hundred cups of coffee that will make your energy levels at bed time, soar?
3. Is there some project that you are dying to attack which is making you anxious and hyped up?
4. Have you had a tanker load of alcohol before bed time?
5. Have you had an evening meal that was too large for you to consume giving you heaps of energy before you go to bed?
6. Have you slept during the day making it impossible to sleep at night?
7. Does your wife or husband snore like a death adder making it hard to go to sleep?
8. Are you dreaming of work and waking up to find that you have to do it all over again?
9. Are you taking drugs that interfere with your mind making it IMPOSSIBLE to get to sleep?
10. Do you watch the late night news to see what has happened since dinner time leaving you stressed and shaking like a leaf? If you have any of these things in your life it will be impossible to gets a good nights rest with out some sort of change happening.
We will take them in order and try to work out each solution to get the best result.
1. You do NOT bring work home from the office as it will sap your energy and leave you tired and angry. You might say “That’s alright for you but how will I get the work done tomorrow if I can’t do it now?” The old catch 22 applies to this. You have so many hours in a day and if you have to bring work home with you, you have not designated your time properly. This also means that you are not delegating your work load so that you like the rest of the workforce can have your time to your self.
2. Coffee and Tea have caffeine in their makeup and will be of no benefit to anyone that has any intention of going to bed.
Make your last cup just after your evening meal and no eating or drinking from that time on.
3. Lying in bed trying to go to sleep and thinking of a project that you would like to get at is probably the most problematic of all of these problems. I myself have this problem and find it the hardest to beat. A pleasurable project can keep you going well into the night and when morning comes, leaves you tired and grumpy.
4. ALCOHOL is a not an option if you want to sleep well. It may put you to sleep in the first place but you will find that it is not lasting and you will be wide awake a few hours after you go to sleep making your nights rest short and not refreshing.
5. If you eat a large meal, the energy from that meal starts a few hours later making you alert and bright just when you are going to bed.
6. If you have a Nana nap during the day, expect to go to bed late. Every day I have an hour exactly but I rarely go to bed before 1am. I am going to cut this out and I will let you know how I go.
7. Now I cannot speak for myself, but my wife snores like freight train and as the air passes through her teeth it sounds like the train clattering along the tracks. What can you do to fix this annoying problem? They tell me that there are ways and I would like to throw this one out into the comments section to see what you have. For me though, I think it is time for the pillow!
8. God I hate this one. On most nights when I was working I would dream of work and being a driver ,I use to do deliveries and in my dreams every thing went wrong leaving me a nervous wreck dragging my self of to work and start doing it all again. There must be an answer to this one; however I did not find it. Maybe some reader could help with this one as I never found out but it left me flat as a pancake.
9. If you want to sleep well, there is no place for drugs within the human body.
10. If you watch the news late at night you will take that news to bed with you. Read a magazine or do small puzzles that won’t interfere with your sleep is the best advice I can give you for this.
