recreational obiligations
51One of the many issues surrounding most school districts throughout the United States is the availability of finanical funds for school systems. Due to the recent economic crisis effecting our country, numerous cuts and lay offs have been set in place to maintain the finanical hemereging we've experienced in recent years. As results, schools are now obiligated to develop strategies in order to conserve the existing funds that are present and survive until more funds become readily available. Currently, some school districts have decided to implement policies in which students would be required to make finanical contributions to their extracurricular activities after school.
More specifically, high school atheletes in the township of Pequannock New Jersey will perhaps be the proto-type to this imposing notion to have student atheletes pay to play. According to an editorial article titled Another pay-to-play the author touches upon many interesting points which weight against the idea of charging students fees to participate in a sport activity. For example, students should not have to experience the financial burden to pay for a sport, because public schools obtain funding through property tax, federal, and state assistance. Therefore the responsibilty should not be placed on students or their famiies because they have already satisfied their financial obiligation to education their child. Another issue which arises from this proposal is the seperation between families that are able to afford the fees compared to the families who can't. As result a clear disadvantage would be placed on families in the urban sector of our society due to their enability to pay.
The goal for after school sports is to promote excercise, health, social development, and opprotunity for students who are unable to attend college due to economic instability. Through after schools sports students despite socioeconomic status are awarded an even playing field to have access to resources that can ultimatly improve their current status. If such regulations are imposed on less fortunate individuals then the possibilty of negative circumstances in the form of increased criminal behavior will be a firm reality within this country. As result this author feels that the perspective of charging student is an unfair approach to curbing the financial issues developing in the school system.
