Most computer users have no idea how hot their hard drive's can get. They take for granted that the little device inside their computer keeps saving, storing and regurgitating their data. When something does go wrong, they wonder what they could have done to keep it working longer.

There are several free and paid programs out there that constantly monitor your hard drive temperature. They can be used on desktop or notebook computers. Basically, they identify your hard drive type, constantly monitor the fluctuations in its temperature and keep you alert of it potentially reaching a dangerous high. When it reaches that high, you can opt to have your system go into hibernation or shut down completely regardless of what you are doing.

Depending on the program you use, you can set it up to display the current hard drive temperature. From there, you can see what processes on your computer heat up the drive. Burning CDs and DVDs typically cause the most temperature fluctuations but playing a lot of games dependent on a heavy duty video card will also do the trick. Knowing what is causing the fluctuations and high temperatures will also help you find ways to avoid heating up your drive that hot.

Most computer hard drives should run between 50 C and 65 C. Anything above 65 C can be damaging to the hard drive, essentially frying components inside it. Once that occurs, your hard drive could be instantly loss or it will begin losing speed, data and ability to work over time. Once it begins to fry, it is the beginning of the end so trying to stop it before it happens is the best way to avoid losing everything.

By regulating the HD temperature of your computer, you save yourself the hassles of investing a in a new hard drive down the line. They can be expensive, difficult to install and time consuming to reinstall your operating system and corresponding files. Taking the time to be proactive, monitoring your HD temperature and making sure it does not get too hot is the easiest way to keep it lasting a long time.
