Definition of a Reliability Engineer

A reliability engineer is an individual that deals with the study and process of reliability. These individuals ensure that a system and/or component of a system function properly under stated conditions for a specific time period.

Reliability (as it pertains to reliability engineering) can be defined in the following ways:
- device and/or systems resistance to failure.
- device and/or system functions and performs as designed.
- probably that a device/system will perform required function(s) for a set period of time.
- device and/or system fits purpose with respect to time.

Reliability engineers
rely mainly on statistics, probability and reliability theory. Often times reliability engineers employ engineering techniques, such as reliability prediction. Since there are a large number of reliability techniques, there is a wide degree of flexibility within the industry and a variety of reliability degree depends on specific situations. The purpose of a reliability engineer is to develop reliability requirements for particular products/units, establish a solid reliability program and perform the necessary analysis to ensure the device/system meets outlined requirements.


Entry Level, Intermediate & Advanced Reliability Engineer Job Descriptions

Reliability Engineers originate and develop methods for determining reliability of componenets, equipment and processes. These engineers acquire data and analyze the data, preparing diagrams and charts that define problems and recommendations. A Reliability engineer helps determine cost advantages and alternative action plans for processes and equipment in order to avoid failure.

education: BS Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or similar discipline.
experience: entry level, 0 - 2 years experience.

Intermediate Process Engineer Job Overview:
education: BS Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or similar discipline.

Advanced Process Engineer Job Overview:
