The Benefits of City Life

I decided to give an answer to this hub request because I had same challenge some time in 2003 when I completed my National Youths Service Programme in the Federal Capital territory, Abuja.

When I finished my Service in 2003, I got two jobs- one in the city and the other out of the city. It was a big decision that I made because it was like starting life afresh.

I had gotten very good people who wanted me to stay and work there since we've become very intimate.

I have to make provision for accommodation, meet new people and start acclimatizing to the nature of the new city as well as learn the local Language although the official language of communication is English.

This is because my job is a people oriented job where I have to go out to meet people of different backgrounds.

The city has over grown the original settlers most of whom didn't attend secular education.

However, I left sentiment out of it and resolved to be factual.

I considered the following parameters in other to arrive at a good decision which I don't stand to regret today.

A. Is there any difference in language?

I considered the possibility of coping without learning or speaking the language of the people. What impact would it have on my job? Are majority of my target market speaking the local language? How quickly can I learn this language if it becomes compulsory that I must do so and are there business losses to be sustained during this period?

B. Can you cope with city life?

Luckily for me I had lived in 8 cities before I got the last job, so it was relatively easy to adapt to the city life although this city is the biggest in my country.

C. What are the welfare and pay package like?

I made a comparison on what I stand to gain and get where I was and at the city. What does the welfare package cover-Accommodation, housing allowance, Leave allowance, medicals, education?

D. Is there career development opportunity with the city work?

Like in my country, people in the cities get information about job opportunities and career development faster, easier and regularly than people in the suburbs. It could be because of the disparity in the available of infrastructure and means of communication as internet connection. The city applicants have access to networking sites whether local or international.

Most of the companies locate their Headquarters in the city and applicants are usually invited for interviews and job tests in the city.

The Smoky Mountain News is paying homage this week to some of the newsmakers of 2009 by dishing out our annual awards. Few would chalk up 2009 as a year they want to remember, given the generally gloomy pall cast by the recession over nearly every facet of life in Western North Carolina.

I am in the City as well but sometimes you feel taking a look at the suburbs or village.

Enjoy your city life.
