remedies for morning sickness
65The first thing to remember is that every pregnancy is individual and it's alright to toss out advice that doesn't work for you and experiment with what does. For instance, the best tip my first OB gave was to keep unsalted Saltines handy and to have a few before rising in the morning. I'm not a huge cracker fan and unsalted was too bland to take; with no issues with my sodium intake, I switched out to salted wheat crackers and they helped more than I can say.
Ginger ale helps calm the stomach during plane flights, so I tried it during pregnancy and it worked quite well. Later I read that just smelling ginger or lemon has been known to benefit many women experiencing morning sickness. When I had time to bake, ginger cookies were a real treat. If you like the store bought ones, see if they help (the thing I liked about homemade was that I could add extra ginger).
Follow cues from your own body. During my first pregnancy, just the sight of red meat in the grocery store was enough to cause strong nausea. I learned quickly to avoid perfume counters. Giving in to my cravings also helped with the first pregnancy while substituting what I craved for what was easily on hand made me ill. The second time around wasn't nearly so bad, but carrots (which I don't usually eat that much of) seemed to make every meal stay down easier.
Also, in line with taking cues from your body, it's said that it's best to avoid spicy foods, but I grew up with them. Cutting them out of my diet only seemed to affect my moods (making me grumpy), not the morning sickness.
In addition to the things that worked for me, doctors recommend:
- Eatiing many small meals or healthy snacking during the day rather than three big meals
- Drinking before or after meals rather than while you eat
- Nap when you can, but don't lie down directly after eating.
Also, remember that it's important to stay hydrated and get your nutrients. If the morning sickness is so bad that you can't keep anything down at all, speak to your doctor about this.
