I can't imagine a smell much worse than skunk odor. Most dogs that get sprayed are just trying to defend their territory. Unfortunately, the skunk usually wins.

Skunk: 1 Dog: 0

I remembering hearing the commotion outside from my dog. I walked outside to see what happened. The skunk already fled. I was then greeted by my dog, who wanted to be affectionate. Unfortunately, the skunk had won.

Remember, Keep The Skunk Smell Ouside!

Here is my most important piece of advice: Do not bring your dog inside to clean once it has been sprayed by a skunk! You'll not only have to remove skunk odor from your dog, but from your carpet, your couch, etc.

Tomato juice is more likely to mask the skunk odor than completely eliminate it. There are commercial skunk odor removers out there, but before you try those, try this safe, homemade solution. It works.

Homemade Skunk Odor Removal Solution

  • 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1 teaspoon dishwashing soap
  • 1/4 cup baking soda

  1. Combine these together in a large bowl. The mixture will begin to foam.
  2. While the mixture is foaming, liberally apply the solution to your dog and let it set for up to ten minutes. If your dog has been sprayed in the face by a skunk, apply the solution carefully to the face with a washcloth, avoiding your dogs eyes. Repeat this step as necessary.
  3. Use tap water to rinse your dog thoroughly and discard the remaining solution. Do not save the remaining solution for future use because it may explode if covered or stored.
