Solar Renewable Energy

Solar energy and solar power are not the same, although most don't know or care about this fact. The terms 'Solar Power' and 'Solar Energy' are used interchangably, however the terms have different definitions. Solar Energy is utilizing the radiant energy from the Sun. Solar Power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either by photovoltaics and concentrating solar thermal devices, or the utilization of thermoelectric converters, solar chimneys or solar ponds. (some of the latter are experimental) When we consider building design, solar energy (and shading) are considerations. In order to conserve heat that the Sun delivers, thermal mass is used. Optimization of the light in buildings is called a 'Daylighting' technique. Solar water heaters are used in many applications including swimming pools and domestic hot water. Farmers use greenhouses to lengthen the growing seasons, as well as pumps that derive power from solar cells (photovoltaics) in order to move water for grazing animals. In order to harvest salt, as well as clean waste streams, evaporation ponds are used. In order to increase the supply of potable (drinking, cooking etc.) water, solar distillation and disinfection methods provide water for a great many people around the world. There are many simple uses for this renewable energy and the prospect for a great deal more.

Wind Power Systems

The power generated by wind turbines will be emission free. There is no equal in the world of fossil fuels. This is a win-win scenario, there is no downside. The citizens benefit from an improved standard of living and their power needs are met painlessly. Our lawmakers in Washington are currently debating this option along with others. It would seem that all one need do would be to look at projects like wind farms successfully providing power in various places around the world. The western area of Texas is generating enough power to supply power to larger cities in Texas like Ft. Worth. The one obstacle to this is the lack of power transmission lines. The citizens in some areas of western Texas have seen the benefits of converting to renewable energy with regard to wind. Tax revenues have increased to the point that new schools have been planned, computers for existing schools have been purchased and housing is completely filled. In the past this area has been known for people leaving as soon as they could. Now people stay because of this new prosperity. Even tourism has seen a large increase, people come to tour the wind farms as they are oddities. The new 'green economy' is in full force in this area. There only need be an infusion of cash into the area in order to build power transmission lines. The wind farms have no shortage of investors. This is an example of how American know-how can take a front seat in the world economy once again.
