It is a common complaint in retail. Consumers feel they were wrangled, hustled or otherwise misled about a product or service plan. It may be at the time of purchase, down the line when something goes wrong or just an overall sour feeling left in their mouths after leaving a store. While retail associates are trained and continuing training long after they begin their jobs, they may not have all the knowledge to answer your questions and misunderstandings can occur. But where does that leave the consumer? Should they trust retail associates when purchasing consumer electronics?

First and foremost, do not go into an electronics store blindly. Make sure you have done some research on the products you are looking to buy along with questions you want to ask. While you are asking your questions, if something seems unsettling or the associate hesitates, it could be an indicator that they do not know the answer or they are unsure. Do not be afraid to ask for someone who might be more knowledgeable. If they still cannot answer your questions, ask them to look it up or get in touch with someone who might be more confident in their answers.

Remember that most retail associates no longer work on retail, so they are not gaining or losing anything by making the sale. Do keep in mind while they are not on commission, they still are responsible for making numbers in order to keep their job. If you feel they are pushing something down your throat or are going in the wrong direction, interrupt and let them know. If they still are not getting your point, ask for a supervisor or a manager and express to them what you want and the questions you have.

For the most part, retail associates can be trusted when you purchase your electronics. If for any reason you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, ask for someone else or get out of there. When spending the amount of money you might be on electronics, you want to ensure you are getting what you need as opposed to what somebody else might think is right for you. Just trust your instinct, and you will find retail associates to be remarkable, insightful people who can help you find what works for you.
