What Is Osteoporosis

The word "osteoporosis" comes from the Greek for bone ("osteo") and porous. Patients should tell their doctor if they have dental problems because rarely, problems with the jaw have been reported with Reclast. Patients should contact their doctor if they develop severe bone, joint or muscle pain, numbness, tingling or muscle spasms.
It can be prevented by taking little care.

How To Cure Osteoporosis

Women who considered themselves knowledgeable about post menopausal osteoporosis were the most likely to take good care of their bone health, putting a higher priority on physical activity and diet, as well as taking doctor-prescribed medications.Preventive strategies are particularly important for women because they are more likely to develop osteoporosis. In Germany, by the time women are 80 years old, around 1 in 5 will have weak, brittle bones. The risk of fractures increases considerably for both women and men above the age of 75. But bone health is important for all adults. Read on to find out what you can do today to start protecting your bones so that you can have a healthier old age.

Calcium and exercise are important for all ages, and in fact have been shown to substantially help reduce fractures and problems in the elderly years. Exercise itself builds strength and flexibility, both of which help to prevent falls in the first place.Inside bones there is a supporting structure with interconnecting bony webs and rods called trabeculae. This structure is called trabecular or spongy bone because it looks a bit like sponge or honeycomb. In the spaces between the trabeculae is the bone marrow.

Researchers have found that alcohol lessens the ability of progesterone to break down the enzyme monoamine oxidase, thereby increasing depression. Keep the level of progesterone high if there is a problem with alcohol, particularly in women during the 8 days before men the spine can break without the person even realising it has happened. That is called a vertebral fracture and it usually does not cause any noticeable problems. It is one of the most common fractures caused by osteoporosis, along with fractures in the hip, upper arm and wrist.

It's important for patients to drink fluids before getting Reclast to help prevent kidney problems.Women with low levels of progesterone have a 5.4 greater chance of getting breast cancer with 10 times a greater chance of dying from all cancers. Breast cancer recurrence after a mastectomy is more likely if the surgery is performed in the first half of the cycle when oestrogen is dominant than in the second half. The Pill increases the risk of getting cervical cancer as does HRT. Tamoxifen, a weak oestrogenic drug used in the treatment of breast cancer, is classified as a carcinogen. It causes an increase in both endometrial and liver cancer. The dose is dependant on the levels of oestrogen in the body, and will vary from 25mg in a post menopausal woman to 50 mg in a fertile female.

Bones are living tissue. Old bone tissue is continually being replaced by new bone. Cells called osteoblasts produce new bone, while cells called osteoclasts dissolve old bone cells. This process is controlled by hormones and is called "bone turnover".Normally, bone density accumulates during childhood and reaches a peak by around age 25. Bone density is then maintained for about ten years. After age 35, both men and women will normally lose 0.3% to 0.5% of their bone density per year as part of the aging process.

Estrogen is important in maintaining bone density in women. When estrogen levels drop after menopause, bone loss accelerates. During the first five to ten years after menopause, women can suffer up to two to four percent loss of bone density per year! This can result in the loss of up to 25 to 30% of their bone density during that time period. Accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women.

Prevention of further bone loss and decelerating the rate of bone loss is the next step. Diet changes, lifestyle changes and exercise programs focused for the Osteoporosis client is critical in the treatment for this disease. A comprehensive program for the Osteoporosis individual is a four-week program that provides information on the disease, nutritional information with the option of a nutritionist consult, information on energy conservation techniques, site specific exercises for the individual based on a comprehensive evaluation and development of a home based exercise program for the continuation of exercise. The program include an individual diagnosed with Osteoporosis and presents with a standard deviation of -2.5 on the Bone Density Test. Individuals suffering from a fracture or have a component of pain, weakness and dysfunction are also included.

That's not to say that if you are past your teens, it's too late to bother. Calcium and exercise are important for all ages, and in fact have been shown to substantially help reduce fractures and problems in the elderly years.

Endometrial cell growth is stimulated by oesrogen. Endometriosis is where these cells are now growing in areas other than the endometrium such as in the walls of the uterus, anywherre in the pelvic area, bladder, lungs, liver brain and rectum. These cells cuase pain and because they are hormonally sensitive can cause bleeding. High doses of progesterone, 200mg are needed to keep this under control and slowly but surely the condition should disappear. Progesterone will help with the pain.

Middle-aged and older smokers have a higher risk of hip fracture than non-smokers. Researchers have speculated about the possible ways that smoking might damage bone health. The possibilities include toxic effects on bone from nicotine or cadmium in cigarettes. Smoking might interfere with the absorption of calcium in the bones.

It is extremely important to ensure that you do regular weight bearing exercise. Exercise where you are supporting your own weight has been found to maintain and build bone strength, and can determine the maximum bone density that a person achieve.
