Day in and day out, you have to deal with your ringing ear. You get stressed, you are not able to sleep well at night, you easily get fatigued the next day, you are not able to do your tasks well, you get frustrated for not being productive, and you observe that the level of the unwanted sound has increased. And you ask, whatever is happening to you?

Well, you have just fallen prey to the classic tinnitus cycle. Tinnitus, known in layman's term as ringing in the ears, is defined as the perception of sound in one or both ears or in the head where no external source is present. A symptom and not a medical condition in itself, its causes range from ear disorders to circulatory problems. These include noise-induced cochlear damage, stress, sinus problems or allergic reactions, Meniere's Disease, head and neck injuries, age-associated hearing loss, thyroid disorder, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and malformation of the capillaries.

Tinitus can indeed become a vicious cycle if its symptoms are not managed properly, especially stress and immune system suppression. You see, while stress is one of the causes of the unwanted sound, it is also a symptom and an aggravating factor of the unwanted sound. Also, being in stressful situations is part of our day-to-day living and is therefore inevitable. So to prevent it from increasing the ringing in your ears and to cause other unhealthy conditions, it must be managed and controlled. Stress management programs like counseling and hypnotherapy can be of help. Meditation, relaxation therapy, and the use of white noise maskers are also being used.

Another thing that is usually associated with tinnitis is the immune system. Their relationship stems from the fact that the unwanted sound can cause you to develop sleep problems, especially insomnia. The most notable effect of lack of sleep is immune system suppression, exposing you to various infections and diseases that can further aggravate the ear noise.

Efforts must then be made to boost your immune system. This may mean that you would have to change your diet, how you spend your leisure time, and your sleeping patterns, or a change in lifestyle basically. It is understandable that changing your old habits is difficult. But, you have to do it or your overall all health is at stake. You do not have to rush things, though. You can make those changes little by little, one day at a time.

Indeed, covering your ringing ear with your hands is not enough. It may take control of your day-to-day living, and you do not want that to happen, do you? So educate yourself about it, make informed choices, and take control of it and not the other way around.
