Rogues are one of the most popular DPS characters in World of Warcraft today.  They are a melee DPS class which means they do not cast spells, but require the use of poisons and swords or daggers to do their damage.

They have stealth abilities which allow them to sneak around in Player Versus Player, and be a very huge important player.  They can sneak around defences, and also wait for the right moment to strike, one on one with any player. 

Stealth can also be beneficial when attacking those important quests that you are working on.  You can sneak around monsters that you do not need to kill, and get to the ones that you do need.

Lock picking is another bonus of rogues.   They have the ability to pick the locks of many doors, chests you find in instances and looted lockboxes.  These locked boxes and locked instance chests have a decent chance of having a rare or epic item inside, and can only be unlocked using a lock picking rogue or the skeleton keys a blacksmith can make.  As well Seaforium charges made by engineers can open locked doors and chests.  This leaves the options pretty slim for groups looking to include the lock opener in their groups.

Rogues also have crowd control abilities in a few different forms.  Sap being the first one, which can only work on humanoid type enemies that are not in combat.  It can take them out of the equation for up to 60 seconds, and allows for ample time to make a situation a lot easier.  Any damage or spell cast or used on the sapped monster will break the sap and allow it to instantly rejoin the fight.

Blind, which is a 10 second duration ability can be used to just quickly take someone out of the equation, or even to silence a spell caster or interrupt the spell they are casting.  Any damage done with the blind in effect will instantly cause it to break and the affected party to rejoin combat.

Stealth can be discovered if you walk too close to a player character or even a non player character.  They will hear what sounds like a gentle whoosh of air, and have the ability to spot you.  If they manage to get you out of stealth, you can either fight them, or vanish.  Vanish allows the rogue to re-enter stealth, and when combined with cloak of shadows, ensures that magic effects that would instantly pop you out of stealth, would be instantly removed and you will be able to make your get away!

Rogues rely namely on surprise and fast kills.  They hit hard, fast, and with elative surprise.  The best rogues will have you dead before you even know it.  Without blinking if timed right they can drop all cloth wearing classes and even rogues of the same level.
