Discuss: Rules Vs Values
I am new to all this hubbing but just want it as a place where I can find people to help pull apart and further some of my daily thoughts.
last night I asked myself some questions on bureaucracy, red tape, laws and rules.
Essentially the thought was sparked from my company, the bigger we get the more rules we need(?), the more rules the slower we go. - each rule over time meets an obstacle, or gray area. needing modifying or a sub rule or condition. Which inturn makes the process slower once again.
We ran a lot quicker when we had goals and values; it was easy as we where smaller the goals benefited the stakeholders so it could easily be ran this way.
I guess my question is how can this argument be debated towards society?
In the UK where I live we have rules to govern rules all of which have masses of paper work and all of which have exceptions and loop holes. Is it possible to operate on less rules and more values.
Do we need to document exactly what is and what isn't allowed as a hand held device in car? Or can we not put this in with dangerous driving? allow those who police our sociaty and courts to be objective in line with the goals?
I am aware this is a small example; but this value can be applied to empoyment to manfacturing, construction and so forth.
How does this affect the progress of the UK versus more emerging nations? and just how much to the people benifit from having all these rules?
"A rule is made to be broken"
Every rule created presents opportunity for abuse by which you can assume every rule has a price to police.
Just look at benifits rules; these cost the country millions to police and millions more in abuse.
(for the record I love the UK's approach to welfare, I think as a crutch to help the unemployed find work it is fantastic, and it needs to be there for those unable to work. If i was ever injured or out of work then there is no other place I'd like to be).
My question is simple. Could less rules be better?
I am keen to hear other peoples views on any of the above. My view on this is not closed and i'm keen to further my understanding on the debate.
