After some significant thought, I wonder if I need a new pair of running shoes. I’ve had these puppies for over a year now and they have served me well. I run, play, shop and muck my stables with them…

Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for a new pair of running shoes:

  • Don’t be mesmerized by advertizing… do your homework and have an idea of what you NEED and the job your shoes will be doing.
  • When you run your foot elongates and your foot feels the impact of five times your body weight. In some cases, for running, consider purchasing a shoe slightly longer than you would normally wear.
  • Just use that shoe for running. It is recommended to replace them after mile 400. Depending on how far you run your shoes  may last 6months or maybe even a year. Replacement is important as the materials loose their resiliency.
  • Bring your orthotic, if you use one, when shopping for running shoes.
  • Wear socks and if you have special socks you like to wear then bring or wear them.
  • Just like your mommy did when you were a kid, press down on the toe to find the end of your foot. You want enough room to wiggle your toes, about ½ inch.
  • Check the inside as well. Make sure there are no bumpy or unfinished seams.

Comfortable shoes are a must when you are running, so, take care of your feet and they will thank you for it.
