How to Safely Enjoy Savannah, Georgia
58
Savannah, Georgia is known around the country for its beauty, but its locals experience a side of Savannah that most people don't take into account when they're only visiting for a couple of days. While it is not an excessively dangerous place, there are definitely precautions that one should take to get the most out of a visit to America's first city.
Stay Hydrated
This rule comes into play no matter where you are, but the southeast has the problem of high humidity, which makes you sweat faster. Sweating faster leads to becoming dehydrated more quickly, which demands more water. While you can get free tap water pretty much anywhere around the city, Savannah is not known for its water quality. Some people won't even brush their teeth or give their pets tap water. Try to keep a few water bottles on hand if you're going to be walking around for a while. And remember: if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated.
Be Safe
While this may seem to be another no brainer, newcomers to Savannah often think that it can't be that bad, or have an "invincibility" mentality. Visitors and students are often targeted by people who expect them to have money. For this reason it is best to travel in a group and always be aware of what's going on around you. While some thieves may demand compensation face to face, others may be pick pockets. Some may be violent, others may not be. More people in a group equals a higher level of awareness. Obviously, avoid alleys and keep your personal belongings stored out of sight. It's also best to avoid most convenience stores at night and certain others at all times of the day. I know several people who have been held up and/or robbed--in dorms, in broad daylight, in convenience stores, in grocery stores, in apartments, etc. So do be aware of your surroundings. This cannot be stressed enough.
Watch for Traffic
Savannah was originally built around a grid of over twenty squares--most of which are still intact. Because of this, and because the historic district is indeed downtown, traffic is pretty crazy most of the day, and rush hours are horrendous. When walking, be careful of people coming around corners. People do get hit--I've seen it happen. When driving, be very careful going around corners--they are difficult to see around because of trees, poles, and on-street parking. Also be sure to always yield in the median of divided roads. Drive defensively and try not to get mad at the people who can't figure out where they're going.
Taking these and other precautions will help to ensure a safe trip to Savannah, Ga. Enjoy your visit!

Quite a few good tips here. Water is essential if you want to stay hydrated and well. I've had my share of near critical collapses because of lack of water.
