How to save a flash file
68Save flash file
In this short article I'll tell you how to save a flash file so you can put that hard to get flash game or application in your personal website. Saving a flash file is not that hard, but it can be a little tricky and sometimes absolutely necessary when that flash file you really want hasn't got embed code available - only option left is to save that flash file yourself.
Save flash file with Firefox
The beginners approach:
- Go to Tools - Page Info
- On the Page Windows Info click the Tab labelled Media
- You'll see that this Media Section has a full list (with preview included!) of Images, Css files and, of course, Shockwave Flash Files that were downloaded by the Browser while loading the page containing the flash file you want
- So, just scroll down and find that flash file!
- Then you just need to "Save as" the flash file to the directory of your preference.
The advanced users procedure:
- Type about:blank in the adress bar of Firefox
- Select list cache entries or just type about:cache?device=disc (so you'll see the Disc Cache Device)
- After pressing Ctrl-F try to discover the location of the flash file by inserting something related to it: like a fragment of the original website name, or of the file name or just .swf
- After discovering the swf url click it to open the Cache Entry Information page. Then just click on the link and choose "Save link as"
Save flash file with Internet Explorer
- Go to Tools - Internet Options
- Click the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files group (you'll find it on General Tab)
- Open the folder of the temp files by pushing the view files button. Notice that it can have gazzilions of files there, depending on the last time you made the cleanup ;)
- Click View - Details and Arrange Icons by Internet Address.
- Search for the web address of the website where you saw the flash file you're interested. Take heed that can be several of them under the same Internet address.
- After founding your exact match, right click the flash file and choose "Copy", and paste it to the directory of your choosing.
Save flash file for dummies
Use a firefox addon, Internet explorer plugin or a download accelerator like FlashGet to automatically download the shockwave extension (*.swf).
Before going to all this trouble, please be aware that most of flash games have embed code available to simply copy to your website. Resort to this option only after you have tried the following with no success:
- Go to Google. Type the game or application name fallowed by "embed code".
