With the current state of the economy and the high cost of living, it seems like money goes straight from your paycheck into the hands of someone else, that is, if you are lucky enough to have a job. This puts you and many people in a challenging position, not just in the United States but many other countries such as Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France and many others throughout the world.

You are worried about having enough money to pay your rent or make a mortgage payment, make car payments, or fill your gas tank. The last thing that you need to worry about is having enough money to put food on the table and provide decent food for your family. Fortunately, there are ways that can help you save money in your kitchen. The food that is bought and how it is prepared and served can make a big difference in how much money is leftover for other important expenses.

Buying In Bulk and Stocking Up on Groceries

Certain foods such as beans, rice, flour, pasta and other dried foods can be stored for a long period of time in containers that will keep them fresh. These containers can be any type of empty plastic containers with lids that can be closed to keep air out. By keeping these items stocked, you will always have something to cook, even if you are short money for a week or two. The benefit of buying in bulk is that you will almost always be paying less (per pound/kilo/gram etc) when compared to buying in smaller quantities.

Grocery stores usually have sales or specials on certain items. You should bulk up on as much of the sale items as you can afford for even greater savings.

Buying a freezer is a also a good idea, if you can’t afford a new one, there are always good deals on used ones at the local buy and sell websites or news papers. This gives you the option of buying dairy products such as milk and meat and freezing them. You can also use the freezer to freeze seasonal vegetables and use them later. Examples of other products that you can freezer are: fruits, cheese and bread.

Crock Pot Foods

You can use a crock-pot (an electric cooker that maintains a low temp.) to make batches of generic types of stews that can be mixed in with more than one recipes. This can then be divided into small containers (again, you don’t need to buy these containers, you can use many of the containers that some items come in from the store, such as margarine containers) and then frozen for later use. Example of cooked food that can be frozen: stews, taco meat, vegetables, and other types of meats such as beef and pork.

By using the methods described above, you’d be sure to save quite a bit of money without sacrificing anything. Use your imagination and try different things.
