scents of a man: on perfumes and the most recommended men's fragrances

By Cris A

As a general rule, men should have at least three different fragrances at a time. A signature scent, usually the favorite scent, and two others to break the monotony - depending on your mood or the occasion. This would also allow you to create unique scents by applying a very thin layer of perfume over another very thin layer of a different perfume - or using both but on different parts of the body (and you will keep everybody guessing). If you're worrying about the practicality, please note that keeping three bottles of different perfumes which you will use up in let's say a year's time, will cost you roughly as much as keeping a single brand which you will need three bottles of for the same amount of time - minus of course, the versatility. Citrusy, floral and fresh scents are ideal for day wear while musky, leathery and other scents with heavier base tones should go well for a night out.

volume

Some fragrances, specially those made in Europe, are in ounces. So to give you an idea of how much a bottle contains, here's the conversion:

1 fl oz (US) = 29.57353 ml (SI)

1 fl oz (UK) = 28.41307 ml (SI)

unforgivable by sean john

This scent is at once very masculine and luxurious due to the dramatic fusion of rich amber and rum. It's also been described as explosive and cool.

main notes: Moroccan tangerine, Tuscan basil, air accord, champagne accord, birch leaves, sage, Amber, Tonka bean, Rum, Australian sandalwood.

what women say: visceral, masculine

john varvatos

Ideal for the cold clime, this modern, bold and sophisticated scent showcases spicy and warm leathery bases that peak at the dry-down.

main notes: clary sage flower, Indian ajowan, tamarind tea leaves, medjool date fruit and leather essence.

what women say: sensual yet subtle, very masculine

.

.

application

Although Coco Chanel once said that perfumes should be applied where you expect to be kissed, generally fragrances should be applied on the pulse points, or areas of the body where you can feel a pulse. Fragrances should be sprayed from a distance that wouldn't allow the formation of a pool on the skin. Moreover, it should be remembered that rubbing the skin where the perfume was applied may cause distortion of the scent or fragrance.

.

angel men by thierry mugler

Perfect for the man possessing brute strength and soul for it gives off fiery and woody scent.

main notes: lavender, bergamot, peppermint, coffee, musk, vannila chocolate

what women say: clean but decidedly virile and masculine

l'eau d'issey pour homme by issey miyaki

This herbacous scent also gives of the subtlest of spicy notes and woody undertones. It is also long-lasting.

main notes: verbena, tangerine, yuzu zest, coriander, geranium bourbon, blue water. lily, nutmeg, amber tobacco, sandalwood, musk

what women say: easy, social and relaxed

.

.

variations

aftershave - contains the least amount of perfume oil; contains soothing or cooling ingredients

eau de toilette - contains more perfume oil than an aftershave, therefore, should not be applied on the face

cologne (eau de cologne) - has lesser perfume oil than eau de toilette and therefore not as longer lasting

eau de parfum - contains more perfume oil than eau de toilette and therefore longer lasting

parfum (perfume) - contains the most perfume oil and therefore the longest lasting; quite rare in men's fragrances

.

clean men by clean

The scent captures the essence of a man when he has just showered.

main notes: ruby red grapefruit, English lavender, wild raspberry, musk, olibanum

what women say: manly, fresh, sexy, and of course, clean

black code by giorgio armani

A new fragrance from Armani, this scent releases a soft, oriental fragrance ideal for a sexy, everyday use.

main notes: lemon, bergamot, aromatic Mediterranean scents, tonka bean, guaiac wood.

what women say: contemporary and resolutely masculine, engaging

.

..

storage

Fragrances should be stored in a cool, preferably dark area. Inside closets, drawers or cabinets that are not near a window are ideal. Exposure to heat, no matter how minimal, causes faster evaporization.

.

touch for men by burberry

The musky, floral but light scent hints of the summer sun making it ideal for daytime wear (but not exclusively).

main notes: artemisia, violet leaves, mandarin tree leaves, white pepper, nutmeg, tonka bean and vertiver roots.

what women say: timeless, elegant, for the refined gentleman

light blue pour homme by dolce & gabbana

For the man who wants to be mysterious but confident, cool but crisp, this is a must. Scent is citrusy and woody that recalls the Mediterranean shores.

main notes: Sicilian mandarin, bergamot, juniper, musk wood, Szechuan peper, incense, oak moss

what women say: sensual, deep and confident

.

philosophy

If you've put on just the right amount of perfume, people, okay, women would want to come closer and stay close so as to get a better "whiff". Otherwise, they would stay as far away as possible if you smell too strongly. Too much of anything, is bad for the nostrils.

..

colonia intensa by acqua di parma

Modernity and tradition are combined in this scent that carries classic and noble ingredients with citrus and aromatic flavors.

main notes: Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian lemon, ginger, mugwort, leather, musk, cardamon

what women say: young, spontaneous, magnetic

aqua pour homme marine by bvlgari

Highlights a natural fresh scent recalling an aquatic fragrance ideal for the freedom-loving man.

main notes: neroli beigarade, grapefruit, rosemary flower, white cedar wood

what women say: vibrant, sporty, fresh

.

You know, I don't even know what kind of cologne I wear. for the most part, it just sits there in the medicine cabinet for whenever I actually go out, which is never. I'm more of a sunblock lotion guy myself.

well there is no better time to treat yourself with a new scent than this Christmas. wear it to work. sometimes feeling good is knowing you look fine and smell fine - and it rubs off to the people around you. Scents and sunblocks are two different things and you know that :D if you don't know what scent to get, ask the wifey! (i would recommend diddy's)

Oooohh! You smell great today Cris! You're perfume looks quite expensive. I havent seen some of them or smell in real life. I have been acquanted with

issey miyaki, burberry, dolce & gabbana and bvlgari.

I like Eternity as well and cool water by daviduff. L.O.L I sound old school.

But do you know that the birds and the bees game starts with the smell. I mean, we all have distinct smell as individual human beings. It sends signal to the brain whether it is a good mate or not.

wow. I actually was putting off buying my boyfriend cologne because he wanted me to choose his scent and couldn't figure it out. I took some of your recommendations and none of them were what I could picture him wearing so I went to the least likely place to find a guy's scent. I went to Bath and Body at the local mall and found this cologne called elixir black. It was cheap only $20. And there were also Elixir Blue, Red, and Green and all were amazing. Each gave a different type but black was in my opinion the best. It was rugged yet fresh, exoctic yet timeless, and my boyfriend loved it. Well anyway he wanted to make it his own so he went out and bought Angel Men.

He's literally addicted. He said everything you said about it is true. So I wanted to say thanks for the in a way help. You're the Best.

Wow that's a nice story! You must really love your bf to go through all that decision-making bit! Hahaha it's really tough to give perfumes as presents - it's what you like vs what you think he would like! Anyway i'm glad you decided on a scent ultimately. And as for Angel Men, yep that's my favourite, too! Been using it for the longest time :D

I think men should have some kind of "men smell". I found most Chinese men in America don't ware cologne but I am glad my husband does. Your article can be a guideline for those men who have never bought themselves a nice bottle of cologne before.

Applying three different scents in one (even on different parts of a body) that sounds too much to me. Isn't "Less is more"? Just wondering...

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

LOL you are right, men should be taught that they should wear cologne even just for variety's sake - to break the monotony and perhaps surprise the people around them.

of course, wearing three scents at a time really is too much but only if you apply each scent the same amount as you would when you are just using one. a light application or just a whiff of each scent would do to create a layered, unique scent.

i guess a lot of women are like me, we want to smell something more than soap (or sweat) in our men, all my male friends get an earful from me about getting a perfume or a cologne when I don't get a whiff of it in them.

Oh you will love this!  Clive Christensen's scent retails for $250,000! if you do decide to rob a bank to buy one, make sure you have the bottle with you always wherever you go - its a Crystal Baccarat (yep, that's where all that money will have went!). Now who's white trash?! LOL kidding aside, I would say the John Varvatos definitely

Great hub Cris. Iam very fond of Aztec myself which I was given as a gift. I am unable to find it in Australia. Any clues? I have also been trying to track down a particular scent by Gaultier. Do you know of a product listing I might peruse?

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

I'm not familiar with the scent but according to a site it has been discontinued, sorry. As for Gaultier, you might be referring to Le Male (the one in a blue/striped flask shaped like a torso). It's his signature scent. Try perfumery.com - it's based in Australia, too.

Great idea for a hub, Cris A. I learned a lot about modern scents. In fact, I just got "men scents" for both my hubby and son this year, more of a novelty than seriously. My hubby ended up liking his (called "Cubano" and all the bottles are in shape of cigars -- that's why I got it). Very different from what he would normally wear. But he always wears something because he insists that men "stink" and need to make themselves smell nice.

The tough thing about trying to pick a scent is it inevitably smells different on your skin than in a bottle. And scent is so, so personal. I know for me, I HATE 99% of the women's perfumes out there. Some even make me gag. So it's important to test it on the potential wearer to make sure the chemistry is right...

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

yes i agree with the hubby there, men should smell nice too. I mean women have noses to right? LOL

The trick to buying or choosing a perfume is to try something you like, put it on somewhere you sweat the most but is not obscured by your clothes. leave it on for a while, then assess after several hours. you can always go back to the store if you find it to your liking or try another scent.

Why don't you try men's fragrances? I know some women who do and nobody gets bothered, not even the men around them. They (the women) prefer them because it has none of that overpowering sweet smell, and is usually subdued. Or you can opt for those unisex scents that are quite popular now. This goes to show that smelling good is smelling good regardless of gender :D

Hi Cris - not a bad list - if only Abercrombie & Fitch would bring back Woods... and turn it back into a mens clothier shoppe instead of a neonatal unit. I miss the huge tie table and the personal service. Anyhow - I stocked up on this cologne (and balm) prior to them ditching it. Now sells for up to $300 per bottle on the bay. If you ever get a chance to - try this one; Abercrombie & Fitch: Woods

For those of who who think that you must spray cologne all over your body and gargle with it - stay home - one to two sprays (or splashes) is fine. The idea is to allow people who are in your personal space to be able to smell you, not the people from a neighboring state. ok - my rant is done. whew - thanks

How did you ever get that perfume of yours smuggled into Oz?! LOL I've never heard of Woods before but it does sound interesting - you stocking up a supply.

As for the rant - that's why i stay away from weddings! :D
