Let Seal Sing To You!

Starting with his first single released in 1991, British singer Seal has produced a series of top-selling albums and award-winning singles. He's won three Grammy Awards for his music too.

Depending on which album you listen to, you'll find his music spans R&B, soul, dance and pop songs. His newest album, System, will be released in November 2007.

Lately, he's been in the news more for his marriage to German fashion model Heidi Klum. She's best-known for her work with Victoria's Secret and for hosting the Bravo channel's show "Project Runway." The couple have two sons, as well as a daughter from a previous relationship of Klum's.

How I Discovered Seal's Music

I first heard Seal's music back in 1991 when his single "Crazy" first broke through on the American market. It was one of those things that I heard on the radio and then saw on MTV and then hunted down the album.

The song was produced by European super-producer Trevor Horn, who I remembered from waaaaay back when he was 1/2 of the Euro pop group The Buggles. He was also one of the founders of the band Art of Noise. The video used some neat tricks to create multiple Seals and was mostly shot on a white background, and you can even watch it right here!

Sang, Sealed and Delivered - Cover Versions

Seal has done some very interesting cover versions in his career. He did a cover version of the Steve Miller Band's 'Fly Like An Eagle" for the Michael Jordan-animation movie SPACE JAM. He also has done cover versions of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" and Echo & The Bunnymen's "Lips LIke Sugar.

KISS FROM A ROSE

The Big Musical Breakthrough

Although Seal's second album was released in 1994, it really paid off for him in 1996. That year, the single "Kiss From A Rose" was picked by film director Joel Schumacher to be used as part of the soundtrack for the movie BATMAN FOREVER. It got huge airplay and shot to the top of the US music charts, propelling it to a double win at the 1996 Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Shown here is the video version that accompanied the film.

Seal's Kiss From a Rose is one of my favorite songs.

I fell in love with the single when I first heard it on Seal's second album. I figured it would be a huge hit, but would never have guessed it wouldn't be big until it got used for the Batman movie.

He's a talented singer but I don't consider his sound really R&B. Maybe "adult contemporary".

Well, when you buy his music from the iTunes store, some of it comes labled as the genre "pop" and some comes as "r&b."
