If you are new to search engine optimization advice, here is what you need to know:

  1. Your site needs to be focused.
  2. Your site needs useful, original content.
  3. Your site needs to be well organized, driven by topic.
  4. You need other sites to link to you, and your site to link to strong authority sites in your chosen market.
  5. Your site should have a privacy policy, a "contact us", and, if you sell anything, a refund policy and a disclaimer.

This seems pretty easy stuff, and once you know about blogs (every website should have a blog, and preferably based on wordpress), website directories (you get your site added to these directories, and you get better rankings in the search results), and of course the hundreds of linking strategies that are out there.

Some say that reciprocal linking is dead, but I still see value in getting involved in reciprocal link programs. Personally, I have a strong dislike for any kind of work that can be undone, and that is what link exchange programs are like...if your link to their site ever fails (for whatever reason), they remove the link to you, so it is a bit of a precarious way to build a site's reputation.

I believe the best way to really build a site's rankings and reputation is by developing syndicated content - content that other sites publish, along with a link back to you. These kind of links tend to last a lot longer than any other kind of links, and that means you can build them up over time to get better and better results.

Coming up are some of the more professional seo content, with a real amount of stuff you can put to use right away to boost your rankings. This stuff is not the usual list of things you hear about, so grab your favorite beverage, and settle in with a notepad, and get ready for a great learning experience.
