INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE FANCY HEAD GEAR FOR SEIZURE VICTIMS

I am the mother of a special needs daughter who has had seizures most of her life. We have tried all the conventional treatments, and some of the non-conventional treatments as well. I believe in holistic treatments and treatments such as music and art to help the brain rethink its electrical pathways, thus reshaping how the brain waves travel through the brain, and perhaps upending the seizure activity in it's path.

However until the day comes when we can be successful in that endevor we are still caught in the everyday world of keeping her safe. Her seizures are one where there is absolutely no warning, and she falls as dead weight where ever she happens to be. As you can imagine she has sustained some pretty good falls. It is her head of course we are most concerned about, so in our trying to keep her safe, we have searched the web for head gear which does not look so confining as to call attention to herself. The head gear we came up with is a baseball cap lined with a flexible foam. It is easily molded to the shape of the cap and it is spongy enough to take a blow and help fend off sharp objects or corners.

I found the sponge at a reuphostering company. You can buy it by the yard and it takes about 1/4 of a yard to make the cap. We make a circle big enough to cover the inside of the cap and then make cuts toward the middle so the foam will bend to fit the circle. The foam does not have to be glued down it stays just fine inside the hat. You may have to search for smaller or youth size caps if the head is small, but we look for caps that are ajustable to compensate for the difference in head size. We also have a variety of colors to match the attire of the day.

We also found there needs to be a chin strap of some sort, because when the body goes down the hat comes off if there is not a strap to hold it in place.

For person's who's needs fall into a more stable or sever head gear, this would not be suitable, but for the less sever head trauma's, this works well.
