We all know how it goes. You get the scoop and start digging into the litter to collect. It can turn messy and it definitely is smelly. You put the collected poop inside a bag and throw it in the can or flush it in the toilet. You spray some air sanitizers to rid some of that smell that your littler-cleaning activity stirred up. We all do this at least once a day.

It is a dirty job but we all do it for the love our cats. The good news is there are now cleverly designed litter boxes, the so-called self cleaning litter box, to make cat owners' lives a little easier.

These self-cleaning litter boxes may be categorized into two types: The fully automatic litter box and the semi automatic cat litter boxes. The first type are those that cleans itself even without the help of humans while the second type are those that still needs some human hands to help it do its self-cleaning job.

This catgenie cat litter box is perhaps the ultimate cat litter box out there as it does everything! It automates everything that needs to be done to deal with your kitty's poop.

Here's how it works:

• The catgenie automatic cat litter box comes with its own washable granules. It doesn't use regular cat litter that we are used to (which we throw away after using). The CatGenie washable granules looks and works the same way as ordinary litter but good thing about it is that it is washable and reusable an indefinite number of times.
  
• Cat pee will drain through the CatGenie's washable granules and into a reservoir for liquid waste. It then gets treated there with odor eliminating Sani-Solution formulated by CatGenie.
• Solid wastes is automatically scooped up by a robotic scoop called the Genie-Hand and is dropped down into a reservoir where it gets liquefied by water and the CatGenie Sani-Solution so it can be flushed down easily down any drainage.
• A mixture of water and CatGenie Sani-Solution is used to wash the reusable litter granules right inside the litter box basin. The basin rotates while the Genie-Hand acts like a stirrer to agitate the granules into scrubbing each other and the basin surface to clean it.
• A built in blower dries the litter box and the granules after washing.
• Cat litter box is clean and ready to be used again and you barely did anything but push a button!

This one looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi kitty cat blockbuster with its sturdy looking dome and its rotating cat poop cleaning action. The Litter Robot is a higher price range fully automated self cleaning litter box like the cat genie but a lot of kitty fans are very happy about it and are giving it rave reviews (again, like the Cat Genie).

Here's how the litter robot works:

• When nature calls, a built in weight activated sensor detects the presence of your cat. After 7 minutes, the self cleaning cycle starts with the globe starting a slow counter clockwise (vertical) rotation.
• This rotation is how the litter robot removes and separates the clumps formed by cat pee and poop from the clean (clumping) litter.
• The clumps are then deposited in a large capacity drawer that you can line with a standard garbage bag.
  
• When the globe then returns to its home/starting position, the litter bed will be clean and ready for the next use.

Here is another no-touch, no-scoop litter box that does it all for you automatically. The only thing you need to do is throw away the disposable litter tray. It's also not the cheapest and there will be ongoing costs because you are going to need to stock up on the disposable litter trays. But it does work and the testimonials attest to that. The concept behind this product is sound so I believe that's why it's getting good reviews.

Here's how this automatic litter box works:

• Twenty (20) minutes after your cat does his/her thing, the scoopfree automatic litter box rakes all wastes into a covered trap which prevents them from smelling like what they are.
  
• This litter box uses a disposable tray that comes pre-filled with advanced FreshStep Crystals designed to eliminate the ugly smell and absorb wet pee really fast.
  
• The scoopfree litter made up of FreshStep Crystals do not clump when peed on. Instead it absorves all urine to lock in the smell.
• Replace litter tray every 20 to 30 days.
  

This one is the cheapest of the 4 cat litter boxes featured on this page and is quite popular on Amazon. It invented a pretty ingenious way of separating the cat pee and poop clumps from the clean litter with a single motion. No need for us humans to scoop all the litter clumps (yes, this cat box needs clumping litter to work like the litter robot). No electronic parts, no wastage of clean litter, this cat litter box is the most economical!

Here's simply how it works:

• The omega paw self cleaning litter box cleans itself when you roll it to all the way to the right until the top part touches the floor, after which you roll it back to its upright position.
• The litter box's internal mechanism separates and deposits the clumped pee and poop into a pullout tray that you can empty into your garbage bin. Remember that this only works with the clumping type litter.
