Does Self Hypnosis Really Work?

What Is Self Hypnosis?

To begin your self hypnosis education I will attempt to

dispel any myths or misconceptions you may have about

hypnosis, hypnotherapy, or self hypnosis.

1. One of the most common myths is that being hypnotized is

anything like what you see in the movies or on TV.

People usually think about some mad looking hypnotist with

staring eyes, a weird moustache, and a pocket watch being swung

back and forth. The hypnotist says "Look into my eyes!"

He snaps his fingers and the subject immediately falls asleep

and proceeds to do everything the evil man says! When the

subject wakes up he remembers nothing.

This is nothing like real hypnosis where the subject remembers

everything in the hypnosis session and only does what they want

to do.

The hypnotist can't make the subject do anything that is against

the subject's moral code. This has been proven many times in

university studies. And 99% of people remember everything that

happens during a hypnosis session.

2. Some people also think that when they are hypnotized that they

will tell the hypnotist all their secrets and be embarrassed by

something they wanted to keep private.

With self hypnosis this isn't such an issue because the subject

is by themselves. But even if someone was around the rule above

still applies and the subject won't do anything they don't want

to do.

3. A lot of people believe that they can't be hypnotized anyway

because they are too smart and have really strong will power.

In fact, the smarter you are the easier it is to be

hypnotized and if you have strong will power you will be able

to concentrate better which also leads to better hypnosis.

4. Others aren't worried that they can't be hypnotized, they are

worried that they will STAY hypnotized.

This is nothing to be concerned with because of the thousands of

years that hypnosis has been practiced there has never been a

case of this happening.

If you listened to a self hypnosis tape and half way through it

the batteries went dead, you'd just naturally come out of it in

a few minutes.

The same would happen if a hypnotist put you into hypnosis and

then dropped dead on the spot. You'd just come out of it naturally.

The truth is that hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that

everyone has been in at different levels throughout their lives.

A deep hypnotic state is somewhat like a vivid daydream.

You may be thinking about doing something else far away and for a

time it's like you're actually there until someone calls your name

and you're pulled back to reality. That person see's the look

on your face and says, "Were you just daydreaming?"

That state is very close to what you will experience once hypnotized.

Other naturally occurring hypnotic states are;

1. Driving your car,

2. Listening to music,

3. fishing,

4. going to sleep,

5. waking from sleep,

6. and watching TV.

In fact, that is one of the reasons TV advertising is so

powerful. Because you are in a relaxed and 'receptive to

suggestion' state of mind.

We are going to use this state of mind, not to get you to

buy something, but to change something about yourself that

you want to change.

Another major concept to think about is that all hypnosis is self

hypnosis. I will repeat that because it is important...

"All hypnosis is SELF-hypnosis."

If you are a subject being hypnotized, the only tools that the

hypnotherapist has to put you into a hypnotized state is by

giving you verbal commands.

The hypnotherapist asks you to think of certain things that guide

you into a relaxed state. If you refuse to think about those things,

well guess what...the hypnotist has no power over you.

So hypnosis is a collaborative relationship between you and the

hypnotist where you both contribute to the hypnotic state.

In self hypnosis it is a collaboration between you and your sub-

conscious mind. The more you pay attention and give it your full

concentration, the more you get out of it.

The Conscious and Unconscious Minds

The conscious mind is the rational analytical mind. It tries

to solve everyday problems you come up against. It is also

where your will power comes from as well as your short term

memory.

The conscious mind is wherever you focus your attention on at

any given minute. In self hypnosis we want to point that attention

inwards for a minute and become aware of our unconscious (or sub-

conscious) mind.

The unconscious mind is responsible for all sorts of automated

processes and behavior so that we don't have to concern our-

selves by thinking about all the information in our lives.

When you learn a new skill your have to consciously think about

it at first but then it becomes automatic. Like learning to

drive.

The problem is that people programme unwanted behaviors into

their unconscious without meaning to and they stay there until

something is done about it...like self hypnosis.

The way this works is through a curious behavior of your brain

that produces an amazing effect. The behavior is that your mind

cannot tell the difference between a real or imagined experience.

I do not mean that if you imagined being in space that you will

believe it and tell people that you were there. I mean that your

body has the same physical response AS IF IT WERE THERE. As long

as you imagine vividly enough...which is what self hypnosis helps

you to do.

Studies have been done to prove this and one involved getting a

subject to vividly imagine that one of his arms was resting on a

window sill in the sun. The temperature of the skin would elevate

and the arm would even perspire.

It is a very powerful technique.

To demonstrate this properly I will get you to perform a test

that a lot of hypnotists use to determine how "hypnotizable"

a person is.

It is called a suggestability test and is not a hypnosis session

or an attempt to hypnotize you. It is just to determine how easily

you will follow suggestions and therefore make changes in yourself.

the directions now. Don't worry, it only takes 2 minutes and it's

fun!

Thanks, but the formatting is kind of strange... lots of line wraps where they aren't supposed to be.
