Unemployment

H.R. 3548 in the Senate October 27, 2009

For several weeks H.R. 3548 has been at a stand still in the Senate. In the meanwhile, 7,000 unemployed lose their benefits everyday. In September 400,000 people lost their unemployment benefits, and by the end of October another 208,000 will lose their's. Considering there are six unemployed workers for each job opening, regardless of whether people want to work, there's not enough jobs out there. People are not worried; they're desperate. Many have recieved eviction notices or mortgage foreclosures, and they just don't know where to turn anymore.

It's not a problem with the terms of the bill or funding as much as it is certain senators wanting to add unrelated amendments to the bill. The unemployments benefits would be paid for by extending 0.2% of the FUTA tax through 2011 instead of expiring in 2010. According to Washingtonwatch.com, every family in the U.S. will spend about $24 to support the unemployment extension. However, finally Americans can see some progress made in the Senate today. The Senate reached a majority vote, 87 to 13, on the motion to invoke cloture to proceed to consideration. A cloture limits the debate on a bill to thirty hours.

Before the vote, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Benjarmin Cordin (D-MA), Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) all gave fantastic speeches on why H.R. 3548 should be passed. I was especially impressed with Senator Byron Dorgan. You could tell he was visibly frustrated with some of the Senator's shenanigans over the past couple of weeks.

In contrast, there were still resistant, stubborn Senators. The Senators who voted nay are: Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY), Senator Thomas Coburn (R-OK), Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE), Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), Senator Christopher Bond (R-MO), Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), and Senator Micheal Enzi (R-WY).

To refresh your memory, Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) were senators that objected when the Senate tried to vote on the bill before. This time Senator Kyl voted aye, and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) voted no.

In an articled called Friend or Foe of the Unemployed? Nay Votes on Unemployment Benefit Extension Bills 2008-2009 I wrote on October 20, 2009, I published a list of all the nay votes on all three unemployment extension bills. Below is a table of how the nay voters today voted on prior unemployment extensions.

I have watched over the years and our senators are (or ) think they are getting more powerfull each day ; they need to come to the realization that one day " (WE) The people" are going to get fed up and put them not only out of office ;but put them on the same level the citizens of this country are on and make them accept Social security just like the rest of us,based on a percentage of what they make in there official position. Senators and congressmen(&women), I honestly think the Ball has started rolling.

I agree Frank...but we the people better be fed up sooner than later as our nation is in rapid decline now. Let some of these politicians try to live off of unemployment for awhile and see if they don't think differently about getting a vote passed to help those who are on the brink of loosing all they WORKED for.

They should also remember what started the economic crisis in the first place...the mortgage industry crisis. They had a big hand in that and so I blame them for the loss of many of the first wave of jobs that were lost. They need to stop playing politics and start looking out for the People instead of their own selfish special interests.

I had a successful consulting practice from my home in executive search research until May of 2008. There is very little left of the executive search business and we researchers were the first to go. Imagine trying to find a job in a new field when you are 57 years old! Thank GOD for unemployment benefits. I continue to spend about 30 hours a week just looking for jobs to apply for that remotely match my experience. My file is about a foot thick and I am beginning to believe that I will reach retirement age before I will be re-employed--what a waste!

I agree with Frank and Leslie and i think that they should stop playing around with this because people are clinging on to a thread even with the small unemployment check they are or were receiving its a shame that this senators campaign so hard claiming they are for the people and once in office they get brand new. Im from the state of georgia and the umemployment rate is 10.2 and all our senators are voting 'nay' shame on you. Cant wait till your seat is available for vote because u are out of there my friends

I am one of the lucky one's out there with a job yet; however, my fiance has been unemployed since Feb. He is a skilled trade worker and has no luck whatsoever finding a job. He is ready to resign to the fact that he is going to have to work at Walmart for low wages and little dignity. This is going to break our families apart. I just don't understand how our government officials are stalling on these benefits for people who need them. It makes me sick.

Honest, hard working family providers are emotionally, physically and financially lost. Not only the monetary issues affect them but also mental frustration of dealing with gender role changes. My soon to be husband is now Mr. Mom to our four children while we are relying my income to pay a mortgage, bills and buy what food we can with what is left.

We live in WI so I am dreading the heating season. I am going to apply for heat assistance this year with things being so tight.

Rome fell collapsed on itself; if we don't do something to spread the wealth shared amongst the few in this country with the rest of our nation; so will we.

I suspect that part of the problem was the "attachment" to the bill extending and expanding the $8000 tax credit. It gives them a reason to stall on the vote.
