Your wedding is the most important day of your life. The traditional white wedding, wearing vintage wedding gowns, is now the dream of most soon-to-be-married women.

The interest in these beautiful old fashioned vintage wedding gowns is catching on pretty fast with the fashionistas of today.

An awesome look on your wedding day is the vintage look and style. It is unique, different, and, the vintage theme can be breathtaking for its traditional style.

Finding vintage wedding gowns is not as easy as one may think, so the next best thing is to have them custom-made, by bespoke wedding attire designers.

This is where vintage wedding gowns sewing patterns comes in as the best alternative to finding authentic vintage wedding gowns.

With sewing patterns, you can get your wedding gowns fashioned after the 1940's, on up to the 1980's.

These designs are always one of a kind, as they are the authentic patterns of wedding attires of the past era.

The commercial emergence of graded sewing patterns in 1863 revolutionised home sewing, and was produced from tissue paper, an invention of Ebenezer Butterick, ably assisted by his wife, Ellen Augusta Butterick. She reportedly was fed up and frustrated with the then contemporary patterns which came in only one size. Mostly, each different pattern had a different size which necessitated a manual grading of the design.

Wax or chalk was employed directly on the fabric, to grade these designs, and this was essential before you could start to sew. Most found this a frustrating effort, time consuming and definitely laborious. Although it is also used for women's' clothing, the drafting method is more commonly employed in men's garments and involves drafting a pattern directly onto pattern paper using a variety of straightedges and curves.

Because Butterick was a renowned tailor, he was on familiar terrain. He had always had to draft custom patterns for each and every individual and then grade it (systems used by Victorian tailors),to a custom size. So time consuming, and such an endless chore .

Working with templates as his form, he eventually began using tissue paper which had the advantage of being thin enough to cut many layers simultaneously, and was easy to package and transport. This evolved in his mass production of sewing patterns.

Butterick was not the first to use tissue paper for sewing patterns, as it was used by several clothes makers of that era, however, he was the first to produce these on a large and commercial scale.

The Buttericks' graded patterns for home sewers became massively popular, as they made modern fashions and styles accessible to the rapidly expanding lower middle class. People who could not afford to purchase custom-made clothing in the latest style each season, but still wished to be fashionably and stylishly dressed. However, they were out of the reach of the poor.

VINTAGE WEDDING GOWNS AND SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

Today, there are some applications that can help a seamstress customize a computerized pattern to fit any body measurements and/or body shape.

It is a 3D technology, that enables the sewer to see a virtual simulation of the final garment as it will appear. This reduces the Time-to-Market as well as the number of muslins/test garments that are needed.

SEWING FLAPPER VINTAGE WEDDING GOWNS

The flapper dress design is a hot trend for vintage wedding gowns in 2009 and it is being embraced widely by fashionistas, but with some variations. Sewing a flapper dress design for your wedding gown is being bold, assertive, energetic and almost sassy.

A flapper style vintage wedding gown is practically made for dancing and swinging away as wildly as you may wish, at your wedding reception dance. You'll be 'cutting a rug'.

The flapper dress, prominent in the 1920's, was a style celebrating the independence of the woman. Defying convention and looking flirty and a little sexy, the flapper dress style , with new takes strutting down the fashion runways, is not inappropriate for today's wedding couture.

Usually cut loose, it’s a shift dress design that drops straight down. They hint, in an intriguing way, at your shape, rather than displaying your curves in an open way.

There are many variations of the flapper dress, and when considering sewing a vintage wedding gown, you can add elaborate hand beading which is definitely in line with the flapper couture style.

When sewing your vintage wedding gowns, you can add rows of stringy fringes or cascading layers of fabric. Many brides who desire a vintage wedding dress love the beautiful 'handkerchief' hemline which was pioneered by Coco Chanel in the 1920's.

These handkerchief hemlines are layers of sheer fabric, that falls at about tea-length. To modernise it, the sheer fabric can be cut to fall asymmetrically, or into many pointed pieces that fall to the knees.

Hemlines can vary from the demure calf-length to just above the knees.

To go all the way, sew a veil just like the actual flappers did. As was the norm at the time, a short flapper wedding gown demanded a long veil, and a long wedding gown, a short veil.

Remain bold, distinct and different by sticking to the fashion with a beaded headband, or a chic feather plume or a feather hairclip.

Having said all this, sewing vintage wedding gowns, with the flapper style in mind is a great way to combine elegance, beauty and the fun of the roaring 20's!
