Shirley MacLaine: Frieda's Favorite Famous Redheaded Comediennes Series
76I have put together in this series a list (by no means complete) of some of the most influential redheaded comediennes in my life. They've made me laugh. They've stuck in my brain. I think of them often. No one can do what they have done in the way that they've done it. I search out movies and shows that they have been in.
Each series will have a line of hubs, each dedicated to a different Frieda's favorite famous comedienne. And each line with have a feed to the rest them and a matching graphic (redhead, brunette, and blonde).
I sincerely hope that all of you enjoye this series as each hub comes out. Let me know if there are any you're looking forward to. Comments always welcome.
Enjoy.
Feel free to thumbs up any articles from this series you like! Frieda loves it when you let her know you lover her.
Shirley Maclaine
Shirley MacLaine was born Shirley MacLean Beaty, in Richmond, Virgina in 1934 on April 24th (Taurus). Shirley Beaty was named after Shirley Temple. (She was born six years one day after Shirley Temple, who had already, at the age of 6, recieved great fame and celebrity status.) And yes, Shirley Beaty's brother (younger) is none other than Warren Beaty.
Like Carol Burnette, MacLaine's acting (movie/television) career began in 1955, when she starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry.
To date she has been in 60 films, and a number of Broadway productions, TV shows, etc. Her favorite actor to work with? She can't pick just one; it's a tie between the two Jacks - Jack Lemmon and Jack Nicholson. She loves them both dearly. Her latest work was in 2008, where she played Coco Channel in the movie of the same title, and matriarch Amelia Thomas in Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, a television film for CTV (who now owns the rights to ALL of the Anne of Green Gables catalogue).
Upon winning her first Oscar as Best Actress for her work in Terms of Endearment she laughingly said, "I deserve this." Many think she was joking, but quite frankly, I know that she knew she deserved it. She deserved every award she recieved, and then some. Her dedication to everything she puts her mind to is an inspiration to say the least.
Shirley is known for her acting, spirituality, and political persona's equally. She published her first book, Don't Fall Off the Mountain, in 1970, the first of many. She was also actively involved in Robert Kennedy's 1968, and in George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaigns; though her political activity did not stop there.
She's made people laugh, she's made people cry. Her personality, spunk, determination and smarts puts her in the lead for anything she sets her mind to. She's unpredictable, yet balanced. Strong in heart, and strong in mind. She's faught for what she believed, every step of the way, and still does, all the while with a great sense of humor.
In 2000, Shirley launched her own website called ShirleyMacLaine.com where her motto is "Life is a Bowl of Cherries.... Never Mind the Pits." Here you'll find information on:
- astrology
- numerology
- spiritual life
- aging
- health
- sacred sites
- dreams & prophecy
- UFOs & phenomenon
- environment
- reincarnation
- pet pages
She'll show you a sample, but you'll need to be a member if you want the following, and no, it's not expensive, and costs half for students, senior citizens, and overseas users:

Now lets watch as she makes us laugh. Enjoy the clips.

I've saved the best for last. Didn't think there could be a better clip than innamorata? Guess again. Thanks to KCC Big Country, one of my favorite hubbers here on HubPages, who found this great clip for us all to enjoy. This is a role that won Shirley a Golden Globe in 1984 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.
Shirley often played a b****. Blunt and do as I please. She was fantastic at it. I don't think anyone can stop laughing when she does. Shirley MacLaine proves to the world that not only can you can be loud, mean and dramatic and hysterical all at the same time, but that nasty old bags can have a soft soft heart. Her characters have depth. They make you laugh, they make you cry, they make you feel, they somehow or other give you strength... and make you fall in love with her time and again. Oh Shirley, how we do love you.

My favorite of her roles was in Steel Magnolias when she played Quiser Boudreaux. She is hilarious in that role! Another great hub, Frieda!
Hey Candie. I know! Isn't she gorgeous?! Well, I suppose it is a bit like that over here. okay, it used to be, when I was a bit more energetic. Now it's just half assed. =D
Hi KCC. Yes! I was looking for a good clip of her in that but couldn't find one i liked yet. I'll add one in if I do. If you see one, let me know.

This is the best one, I'll keep looking.
Oh cool! Much much much thanks KCC! Will check those out. Find anything better, just let me know and I'll exchange it.
Well a half assed dance of seduction is better than "HEY GIMME A BEER!" LOL!
This is very true, Candie. Very true. :<D
Oh, I would love to see her in Anne of Green Gables! Am actually re-reading Anne of Avonlea right now and am quite enchanted! But I'm digressing...Shirley MacLaine has a such a quirky face, you want to smile right along with her. I enjoyed all her books too - such an unusual woman!
Isn't she though? She's so well rounded as a person. She loves to travel too. She couldn't stay put for a television series. I'd love to watch her on Anne of Green Gables too. I wonder when it's airing again or if they have it on dvd at all.
Shirley MacLaine is one woman I'd love to meet, not because of her acting and dancing, but the whole gammit of who she is as a person. She has a spark that is awesome.
She really is Jewels. Don't you wish you could just give her a call and say, "Hi, wanna go out to lunch?"
Totally. Yes, I'd love to have coffee or lunch with her. Exactly what I'd like. If she happens to read you and she invites you, please remember your friends!
I love her and pairing her with Jack N. was brilliant, also loved her humor in the Magnolia role. funny woman, in more ways than one too.
Jewels, lol I certainly will remember my friends. you'll be my number one invite!
Mr. Walrus, totally brilliant. I'd love to see them in another movie. They didn't work together enough. I wonder why directors didn't pair them up more often.
What a woman - something I've never been able to get used to is the fact that Warren (wow) Beatty and she are siblings! So wonderful in their own ways and yet sooo different! Love all the clips Frieda - and just love your little redhead graphic :)
Thanks for the mention, Frieda! Glad I could help you find the Ouiser clip from Steel Magnolias. She was too funny in that role!
Shalini, yeah, isn't that strange. They are so very different. Thanks and glad you love this
KCC You're very welcome, thank YOU! Perfect clip. I remember that scene so well! Wasn't she just the best in that? What a movie.
I've never understood exactly why, but my wife loved her in "Two Mules for Sister Sara" where she is a prostitute disguised as a nun. As a elementary school student who had many interactions with nuns, I not sure how to reconcile the nun/prostitute paradox.
Hey Jeff. I remember that was a very popular one! I know what you mean, but Shirley can do the impossible and make it believable. It is quite a paradox, though, lol.
Love her to bits, The Apartment and Sweet Charity are 2 of my fav movies. Many years ago I send a letter to her at her home in Malibu asking for her autograph, 4 months passed and I forgot about it, then one day a jiffy bag dropped though my letterbox with a signed photo of the lady herself.
Great hub !
Thanks Health Tip. Omg you are so lucky!!! How cool is that? How did you get her address? I want one too! Wow.
God it was like years ago I was only about 27 and it was in a celebrity mag that gave the addresses of some top hollywood actors and there was Shirley herself, and no yer not getting it !!
But here is now loads of similar ones online, just did a quick google search so try it.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz
And shame on you for not having a videoclip of Sweet Charity, I love that movie to death !!
Health Tip, thanks for the link! And thanks for mentioning Sweet Charity. I'll get a clip in here of that asap!
I will be watching for it lol !
Oh just scrolled up after I typed that, you have put it in, you are a star, I am off to watch it, cheers ; )
Yeah, I'm pretty fast, lol. If you know of another one you'd like me to add of Sweet Charity, let me know. You're most welcome. Thanks for the request!
