A form of bracelet, ornaments worn around the ankles are referred to as anklets or anklet bracelets .

Historically, anklets, worn barefoot for centuries, was adorned by married women in India, being an all important jewellery in Indian marriages, worn along with saris, and, by maidens and women generally in Africa who wore a cluster of anklets on both feet.

In the late 20th century, casual and more formal anklets became popular in the western world.

THE FIRST KNOWN ANKLETS

Bronze anklet bracelets were around in the era of the bronze age,  judging from the excavated relics found in the temperate area of Europe.

In areas around the Alpines, roughly along the Danube and up the Rhine to the Atlantic, bronze anklet bracelets and similar items were found in large quantities, along with other bronze artifacts characteristic of the time around the year1800 BC, These are attributable to the Tumulus culture that spread across this region at the time.

Anklets are made from a variety of materials, ranging from the casual leather anklet bracelets, which are popular among many young women (and few men), to the more formal anklets such as gold anklets, silver anklets, beads, diamonds and sterling silver anklets. You can also find PVC and nylon ankle bracelets, just to mention a few.

There are charm anklets, with details like little bells, flowers, little tiny charms, animals etc., strung on chains. These are quite popular amongst the fashion conscious and the trend setters.

For a more matured and formal look, an anklet bracelet is better a finer ornamental piece, made in gold , silver, sterling silver, or a white gold chain, maybe with a bit of diamante, or swarovski stones. Having a single charm, falling on the outside of the ankle will be pretty, and adds a little touch of elegance to the legs and feet.

Anklets look great mostly on flat sandals, slides or high heeled slide shoes. Anklets are usually worn on the right foot, but there is no hard and fast rule about this. However in the Eastern and African cultures, anklets are worn on both ankles.

Give your legs an illusion of length, and your ankles a delicate touch, by wearing an anklet. If you have slim long legs, you can wear anklets with charms or a little busy works , if you have bigger legs, go for the thin, lighter scale anklet bracelets. They make your legs more feminine, and will take attention away from the size, or length of your legs, ankles and feet.
