Router is a networking layer protocol devices. It will depends only Ip address Configuration of Simple Router in Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

Objective:

Configuring PC as a Simple Router to connect two separate Networks



Minimum Hardware details:

Infinity Pro BL 6020 – TOPAZ-LD

Processor : P4 3.4GHz

RAM : 256MB (64 MB shared video memory) DDR PC2-4300

HDD : 40GB SATA

NIC 1 : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC ( Onboard ).

NIC 2 : Intel® PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter ( External Card )

OS details : Windows server 2003 Standard edition with SP 1

Host Name : IRCTEST1

Pre-Requisites and Assumptions:

1. IP address series of Network 1

IP : 151.8.X.X

Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0

2. IP address series of Network 2

IP : 10.0.X.X

Subnet Mask : 255.0.0.0

3. Server is installed with Windows server 2003 standard with SP1 and configured with proper IP address and host name.

Routers NIC1 :

IP : 151.8.75.150

Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0

Gateway : 151.8.75.150

MAC address : 00.16.EC 18 40 81

Routers NIC2 :

IP : 10.0.0.1

Subnet Mask : 255.0.0.0

Gateway : 10.0.0.1

MAC address : 00.15.F2.6C D6 45

4. Clients are installed with OS and configured with proper IP address and host

name

Client in Network 1

IP : 151.8.151.14

Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0

Gateway : 151.8.75.150

MAC address : 00 90 27 2C 61 53

Client in Network 2:

IP : 10.0.0.2

Subnet Mask : 255.0.0.0

Gateway : 10.0.0.1

MAC address : 00 10 DC C0 F9 73

Services that should be running On the Router:

1 : Remote access connection manager

2 : Routing and Remote access

Configuration:

1: Go to start -> Programs -> Administrative tools -> Routing and Remote Access

3. Server is installed with Windows server 2003 standard with SP1 and configured with proper IP address and host name.

Routers NIC1 :

IP : 151.8.75.150

Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0

Gateway : 151.8.75.150

MAC address : 00.16.EC 18 40 81

Routers NIC2 :

IP : 10.0.0.1

Subnet Mask : 255.0.0.0

Gateway : 10.0.0.1

MAC address : 00.15.F2.6C D6 45

4. Clients are installed with OS and configured with proper IP address and host

name

Client in Network 1

IP : 151.8.151.14

Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0

Gateway : 151.8.75.150

MAC address : 00 90 27 2C 61 53

Client in Network 2:

IP : 10.0.0.2

Subnet Mask : 255.0.0.0

Gateway : 10.0.0.1

Services that should be running On the Router:

1 : Remote access connection manager

Configuration:

1: Go to start -> Programs -> Administrative tools -> Routing and Remote Access

 

2: Right click on Server status then click on Add server

3: Select “This computer” and click ok

4: Right click on the created server then click on Configure and enable Routing and

      Remote Access.

 Observations:

1. Connection between Network 1 and Network 2 is achieved.

 

2. Shared folders in Client 1 can be accessed by the Client 2 and visa versa.

 

3. When NIC 1, NIC 2, or Client 2 was pinged from the Client 1 ARP cash showed the MAC addresses of the NIC 1of the Router.

 

4. Similarly when NIC 1, NIC 2, or Client 1 was pinged from the Client 2 ARP cash showed the MAC address of the NIC 2of the Router.
