Do you hate your kitchen? Does it feel like you don't have any room? Nowadays, with the price of building materials, smaller houses and smaller kitchens are more common. A small kitchen design can be problematic unless it was thought out well beforehand. Consequently, small kitchens not only feel cramped but finding enough space can be difficult. However, don't despair. Many of the following tips are economical and can make your life easier.

Overcoming a Small Kitchen Design

Although some of these tips cost money, many others don't.

  • Light-colored walls, light-colored ceilings, and light-colored countertops make a small kitchen seem larger.However, you can use a dark shade on the wall closest to the entrance and use lighter colors on walls further away. This trick can make your kitchen appear larger in size and length.
  • Let the sunlight in. Consider not using any curtains, or if you do, use a valance only or light, airy curtains.
  • If the money is available, consider installing a skylight or a greenhouse or bay window.
  • Cabinets that go to he ceiling make a kitchen seem larger, plus, they give you more storage.
  • Cabinets without doors or glass cabinet doors can make a kitchen appear larger.
  • Over-decorated walls can make a kitchen seem smaller and waste usuable space. Make use of any empty wall space with shelves.
  • Hanging baskets can store extra items.
  • A pot rack can make more cabinet space available.
  • If there is enough room, you might also consider using a bookshelf to store extra items like cookbooks, canned goods, etc.
  • If you have wood cabinets, consider painting them a light color.
  • Low haning light fixtures can make a kitchen appear smaller whereas recessed lighting or track lighting can open it up.
  • Under-cabinet lighting can make a kitchen seem larger.
  • Organize your cupboards to create more room.
  • Use under-the-counter appliances whenever possible
  • Eliminate clutter on the countertops.
  • Consider using a wall over and counter top cook top to eliminate a bulky oven.
  • Discard items you don't need. If you haven't used an item in a year, you probably don't need it. Futhermore, knick-knacks just make your kitchen appear more cluttered.
  • Store appliances you don't use very often in cabinets that more unaccessible or out of reach to make room for items you do use frequently in the easier to reach cupboards. You might also consider storing infrequently used items in another room like underneath the bed.
  • A shoe holder or wire rack can be hung over your kitchen door to store items.
  • Wire racks for the inside of cabinet doors can also free up more space.
  • Drawer organizers can help unclutter drawers.
  • You can make an extra drawer available by storing all kitchen utensils in a pretty ceramic crock.
  • Using two-tiered lazy susans can make more room in your spice cabinet.
  • If you have enough room, consider bying a plastic drawer storage unit to hold dish towels or other miscellaneous kitchen items.
  • If you have an eat-in kitchen, consider using a drop leaf table or fold-up table.

By using some of these tips, you can overcome an ineffective small kitchen design and have a more enjoyable working space to fix meals and entertain.
