Reasons for starting your own business

Small businesses are really popular with all types of people, for all types of reasons. If you agree with any of the below statements, perhaps you might enjoy owning and operating your own business.

You...

  • want to be your own boss
  • manage your own working hours
  • control when you take holidays, and how often
  • fulfill a dream (ex. Sell your homemade creations as a profession)
  • work with your friends and family
  • work from home
  • increase your income

Starting your own business

How to get started

Now that you've decided to go ahead and become your own boss, it's a good idea to plan ahead and do some research. The first thing that you need to do is choose the type of small business that you would like to open. You may think that opening a small restaurant sounds like fun, but before you move onto the next step, you'd better narrow it down to a specific style of restaurant. Try to avoid being too vague with your plans because it will hinder your ability to forecast costs and budget.

After you've decided on the type of business, start to plan for location, startup costs, overhead costs, taxes, employee wages (if applicable), and - if necessary - look into a way to finance everything. If you have savings to work with this part shouldn't be too difficult, otherwise you may need to approach the bank for a loan. In the case of buying franchise rights, a lot of this hard work may be done for you, leaving out the financing.

If you do possess the entrepreneurial spirit for opening and running your own small business, the rest should be a labor of love. After you get the business off the ground, it shouldn't be too long before you start to reap the profits of all your hard work.

How did you know that I want to open a restaurant? Or rather, my husband does. He loves to cook and is quite talented.

I like the part about being very detailed in your plans and your aspirations. Vagueness will not cut it and you will quickly lose interest in your venture.

Planning is key! Not just in the beginning but constantly.
