The Real Cost of Smoking

An Impending Crisis

The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a statistics concerning those people who are smoking. An alarming rate was discovered. Almost 80,000 to 100,000 of children started smoking at a very young age, and they have the possibility of dying early because of smoking.

Smoking Statistics of Adults and Youths Worldwide

As early as 9 years old, children start to smoke. This is a very sad predicament. The statistics offered by the World Health Organization gives us a glimpse of the situation that is eating up society, and that is the effects of smoking. According to statistics, about one third of the male population in the world smokes. Every eight seconds, someone dies because of smoking-related diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and heart diseases. There is also an alarming increase in the number of smokers in developing countries like the Philippines as compared to developed countries like the United States of America. Among the teens, ages thirteen to fifteen, about one out of five smokes. Evidences in statistics show that half of those young teens who started smoking go on to smoke for the next 15 to 20 years of their lives. A large number that contributes to this percentage come from Asian Countries.

Why Smoke?

What are the major contributors to the increasing rate of smokers (young or old) worldwide? About 15 billion of cigarettes are sold each day, and 10 million are sold every minute. There are many influences that contribute to the increasing rate of smokers especially those children who started smoking at a very young age. Influences from the media such as tobacco advertising made a great effect on children who started smoking early. At an early age, these children are exposed to the environment of smokers. That’s why they also formed the habit of smoking because of the examples given to them by their adult guardians. Evidently, we can observe that countries who are the main manufactures of cigarettes and tobaccos have the higher percentage of smokers as compared to other non-manufacturing countries. The tobacco market is controlled by corporations from America, Britain, and Japanese corporations.

The statistics of smoking present the impending crisis in our society. Because of the powerful corporations who manufacture cigarettes and tobaccos, it is quite hard to defeat the increasing rate of smokers. But with the proper education of these children and adults who are exposed to smoking, they will have sufficient information on the dangers of smoking. There will be a big possibility that they might be able to stop smoking before it’s too late.
