52Soccer Coaching Tips for the New Coach
Soccer is a wonderful game for children. It is a game that can be played by girls and boys, regardless of size of athletic ability. Unfortunately, there are usually more children wanting to play than there are coaches to teach them. It usually falls to a father or mother of a player on the team to step up and be the coach. Here are a few soccer coaching tips that a new coach can use to get started.
Keep it Fun
Despite the emphasis by some coaches and parents to win, it is important to remember that soccer is a game. Especially at the younger levels, it should be fun for the children on the team. Youth soccer coaching is about starting to develop some basic skills, but also about keeping the children interested. The pressure to win comes soon enough for athletes. In the early years it should be more about developing a love of the game.
One tip to keep your team interested is to find ways to make learning new skills a game. Find ways to avoid having children waiting in line for their chance to run a drill. Divide your team into smaller groups and have more people involved at one time. If you are working on passing skills, run a controlled scrimmage and require your players to make three passes before their team is allowed to score.
Keeping it fun is by far the most important soccer coaching tip. If the team is having fun, they will be more receptive to what you are trying to teach them, and they will be less likely to get discouraged when things do not go their way during a game.
Take Advantage of Existing Resources
While making practices fun will make your players more interested in learning new things, that will become less important if you do not have anything new to teach them. Fortunately there are a lot of resources available to help you. One great resource is to look for soccer coaching videos. Many times these can be found for free at your public library. Be aware though, most soccer coaching videos will be very hard to get your hands on at the beginning of the soccer season.
You can also find one of the many web sites that are devoted to sharing information about coaching. Not only can you find some great soccer coaching tips, many of these sites also post short soccer coaching videos. These are useful because it allows you to see how to the skills are supposed to look when they are done correctly.
Look for Soccer Coaching Courses
The final tip is to find a course that will teach you the basics of coaching youth soccer. They are inexpensive, and many times the club or organization you are coaching for will pick up some or all of the cost. This is a great way to get lessons from an experienced coach on how to teach children the basic skills they need. Teaching soccer skills and strategies can be difficult. Educating yourself will make it much easier to teach the children on your team.
Do not be discouraged if things do not go the way you expect. Even if you never become a world class coach, giving your time and attention to these children is what is important. After all, soccer is just a game.
