Back in 1949, a Rogers and Hammerstein musical titled South Pacific took Broadway by storm.  Nominated for 10 Tony awards, South Pacific won each of them, including Best Musical and Best Score.  Now this long-time favorite musical has returned to Broadway, garnering seven more Tony awards for its efforts.

The South Pacific Story

This musical is based on a Pulitzer prize-wining collection of short stories written by famed author James Michener. He entitled the volume “Tales of the South Pacific.” It was inspired by his own observations during his WWII tour of duty in the region. The short stories were woven together to form one intriguing account of love and prejudice and South Pacific, the musical, was created.

Set on an island in the South Seas during WWII, South Pacific tells the tale of a naïve, young Navy Nurse from Arkansas, Nellie Forbush, who falls in love with an older man, Emile de Becque, who owns a plantation there. It also relates the story of a parallel love affair between battle-hardened Marine Lt. Joe Cable and Liat, a beautiful young native girl.

South Pacific provides its audiences with rich musical experiences and satisfying entertainment, but it does even more than that. It is a thought-provoking tale that challenges you to delve into the controversial subjects of love, pride and prejudice. Is it worth sacrificing love to keep your pride? Is love worth battling for against racial intolerance? These questions are explored in South Pacific and remind us to examine our own position on these topics.
