Can Mountain Dew Cause Lower Sperm Count
What is the relationship between sperm count and Mountain Dew? Some believed that drinking Mountain Dew will reduce the sperm count that may prevent pregnancy. It may also cause male impotency. Is it true? In this article, we are going to debunk this myth.
Let's look at the ingredients in Mountain Dew. It contains more caffeine than Coke and Pepsi. It also contains coloring agent Yellow Dye No. 5. However, no medical evidences can show that high content of caffeine and Yellow Dye No 5 can cause male infertility issues. On the contrary, some studies did show that caffeine can improve the sperm motility.
Joe Conaghan, Ph.D of the Pacific Fertility Center commented that there is no scientific evidence that proves Yellow 5 is harmful to sperm. It is a stable chemical and nontoxic. In other words, the dye has no effect on your fertility.
Yellow Dye No. 5 carries another name which is tartrazine. It is a common coloring dye found in food, drugs, and cosmetics, giving the finished products a bright lemon yellow color. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has certified it to be safe for use.
The industry has been using tartrazine as early as 1916. If it is true it can lower sperm count, then probably by now the FDA should ban it.
The FDA has approved the acceptable daily intake [ADI] for tartrazine is 5.0 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. Mountain Dew doesn't contain a large quantity of Yellow Dye No. 5 compared with other food.
However, this dye does cause some allergies in sensitive people. So far, I haven't heard any medical cases that it can do some damages on your reproductive health or fertility.
The only observation I can share with you is that your urine will be yellowish after drinking Mountain Dew. So, don't believe that it can reduce your sperm count.
However, if you are having trouble getting your wife pregnant and your doctor has issued a clean bill of health for your wife, most probably you may have male infertility issues. Drugs and surgery may help. But if you have a choice, don't you feel it is safer to go along the natural way? Find out how to increase your sperm count without drugs and surgery, relying on natural remedies.
