Stand-up Comedy Tips You Don't Want To Use

I was looking for stand-up comedy tips online and what I found was somewhat shocking.

Let me share some of the stand-up comedy tips that I found and provide you with an alternative perspective.

Here’s the first stand-up comedy tip that I find absolutely ridiculous:

Write with a person in mind. Get into their pattern of speaking.

If you are developing stand-up comedy material for the stage, why would you want to write anything with somebody else in mind?

The absolute fastest way to develop high impact comedy material is to rapidly capture the sense of humor that you already have.

The absolute slowest way to develop big laugh comedy material is to try to “write” comedy for someone else—someone who has a different natural timing than you do, a different perspective than you do and a different sense of humor than you already use and know works.

Here’s another bad stand-up comedy tip that is related to the first:

Duplicate the person's style, but use different topics or subject matter. Do this for many different performers.

In my humble opinion, this is a long and tedious task that really does little to help you reach your ultimate goal on stage which is to be relaxed, be yourself, be in control and command the laughter that you want using YOUR natural sense of humor and perspective.

A much better stand-up comedy tip is to study a comedian who most closely matches YOUR attitude, presentation style, point of view and sense of humor.

Here’s a stand-up comedy tip you won’t see anywhere else:

You DON’T have to develop some sort of “special” persona to kill an audience on stage. If you can average 4-6 laughs per minute on stage, you already have all the “persona” you need to get attention in the world of stand-up comedy.

Here’s yet another bad stand-up tip that I found:

Manipulate your audience. Take them down a particular road and then surprise them with something else.

This stand-up comedy tip is essentially worthless. How do you even begin to surprise and manipulate an audience?

Audiences are “surprised” when you use your sense of humor to react to a particular topic, issue, opinion, observation etc. It is your point of view and perspective that creates the “surprise” factor.

It also has little to do with the actual words that you say—it has much more to do with how you deliver your stand-up comedy material.

No one can tell you how to “surprise” an audience to generate laughter. But you can certainly structure what you want to say in order to have the most laughter impact with your comedy material.

Here’s another stand-up comedy tip you won’t see anywhere else:

Naturally funny people already use a single technique to get laughs in everyday life. That same technique applies to stand-up comedy which is…

They use a keyword or keyword phrase at the end of a sentence or line. By doing this, the true meaning of a sentence is not revealed until the last word or group of words in that line or sentence that creates laughter.

Here’s the last stand-up comedy tip I have for you:

Beware of some of the stand-up comedy tips that you find online. They can lead you astray and actually keep you from reaching your ultimate goal which is to kill an audience on stage.
