Starting a WordPress blog is a big step for any prospective blogger.  There are many other alternatives out there, including a WordPress-hosted blog.  However, hosting a WordPress blog on your own server gives you the control and creativity to do what you want, when you want it and how you want it.  Starting a WordPress blog on your own is a big step forward into the wonderful world of blogging.

For starters, you want to learn everything you can about WordPress. This includes the instructions that come with the initial download, tutorials and any other information you can get your hands on. When you begin the installation process, you want to follow it step-by-step to ensure you are installing it properly. Otherwise, you may have a faulty installation that does not work and adds more frustration to your plate. This is not a good way to start a WordPress blog.

Once installed, you can begin tweaking and tinkering with the different settings. Once your initial settings are completed, you can begin to look at themes and modifications. Each can be installed relatively easy by uploading them to the web server you are hosting your blog on. Each mod or theme will have instructions on how to do that, so just follow those steps and you will be installing them in no time. You can search for mods and themes by Googling what you want to do with WordPress and going from there.

Overall, starting a WordPress blog can be very satisfying.  It gives you the control to do what you want with the blog where you might be stifled or limited going with a service hosting it for you.  Trying seeing what WordPress can do for you and run with it.  You will be surprised at how WordPress works for you and allows you to do what you want with it.
