In Pursuit of Hope

caution -CONTROVERSY AHEAD

  • heading in unknown territories
  • venturing in no man's land
  • therapeutic adventure or medical misadventure
  • when we have not understood diseases how can we understand processes of cure
  • antinature
  • may not be the pandora's box but a dynamite atleast

The Promise of Stem Cells

  • miracles do happen
  • chasing a rainbow
  •  predictable tumour behaviour
  • better understanding of normal cell development will allow us to understand and perhaps correct the errors that cause these medical conditions.
  • Another potential application of stem cells is making cells and tissues for medical therapies.
  • organ donation and transplant compels stem cell
  • curative medicine or experimental medicine

Justification

  1. Today, the number of people needing a transplant far exceeds the number of organs available for transplantation.
  2. Pluripotent stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues
  3. OFFERS HOPE to
  • Parkinson's
  •  Alzheimer's diseases,
  • spinal cord injury,
  • stroke,
  • burns,
  • heart disease,
  • diabetes,
  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis.

Have human embryonic stem cells successfully treated any human diseases?

  • Scientists have been able to do experiments with human embryonic stem cells (hESC) only since 1998,
  • Federal funds to support hESC research have been available since only August 9, 2001,
  • ,they are just beginning to learn how to grow and use the cells.
  •  research using them is still in its early stages.

RAY of Hope

Adult stem cells, such as blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow (called hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs), are currently the only type of stem cell commonly used to treat human diseases. .

The Ethics of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research

does the end justify the means?

Robbing of the bank to help the poor itself is disapproved. Here we rob the poor to help the banks . arent we?

Moral Treatment of Embryos

  •  scientists hope to achieve is the relief of human suffering. Humanitarian Hopes or hopes of the sick elite?
  • There is no test for whether an embryo is a person.
  •  . the use misuse and abuse of human eggs  is left  to our own moral reasoning

Moral Debate Concerning Embryonic Stem Cell Research

protestant and catholic views

Protestant theologian Ronald Cole-Turner, M. Div., Ph.D., has offered a Christian moral defense of humanitarian embryo use.

. Margaret Farley, Ph.D., of Yale University explains that in history and in present theological discussion, there is more than one Catholic line of reasoning, including a strong Catholic moral defense of humanitarian embryo use. For one who concludes that we are not obliged to refrain from using embryos that will never enter a womb, embryonic stem cell research is a case of fostering a worthy end by using only nonpersons as means.
