First Step in Cleaning Your Room – Turn Off the Computer and Cell Phone
63It Needs to Be Cleaned
Whether you are ready to do spring cleaning or if you just can no longer function in the mess into which your room has evolved, it is time to clean your room. Many times, the toughest part of this task is getting started, so you need to set aside some time and then turn off your computer and cell phone. Why? Because in today's society computers and cell phones (especially smart phones with internet access and texting capability) can be extremely distracting. So, in order to give yourself a chance to actually get the cleaning done in a relatively short amount of time, you need to turn off these distractions.
Next, find some music that you enjoy and put it on – make sure it is something that will inspire you to move, not something that will lull you to sleep. Then open your curtains and blinds to let in some natural light and, if the weather allows, open your windows and doors to let in some fresh air and get rid of the stale air. These steps should start to make a difference before you even get started with cleaning.
The first step in actual cleaning is to take the clutter from throughout your room and pile it in the middle of your bed. By putting everything on the place you need to sleep later, you will be more motivated to tackle it. Also, it keeps you from wondering where to start – it is all in one spot waiting for you.
Take dirty laundry and place it in the hamper. Take any clean clothes you have laying around and put it away – neatly where it goes. (Don't just roll it into a ball and shove it in a drawer.) In many cases, clothing makes up a bulk of the clutter. Once it is dealt with, sweep and mop or vacuum (depending on your floor type). Start at the bottom and work your way up. Next go back to whatever is remaining on the bed and either put it in its place, throw it away, or put it in a place to donate later. Get a dust cloth and cleaning solution (if needed) and wipe down all of the surfaces in your room. Don't forget about the ceiling fan.
Strip the sheets off of your bed and add it to your laundry. After you wash your clothes and bedding, put the clothes away and remake your bed. Finally, get some air freshener (Febreze or a potpourri spray) and lightly spray your room.
Enjoy the feeling of a clean room!
