Star Trek - First Contact is the second film featuring the next generation crew. This time they are up against the Borg. Due to his previous experience of being assimilated by the Borg, Captain Picard is commanded to stay out of this and instead fly around in the neutral zone.

While in the neutral zone the crew receives news that the federation has engaged the borg. They learn that the federation is fighting a losing battle so Picard decides to violate his orders and get involved. Meanwhile the Borg is fighting off the attacking federation ships, among all the ships that are damaged is the Defiant, commanded by Worf. The Enterprise shows up just in time to save the federation.

Picard gives the coordinates to destroy the Borg Cube. The Federation destroys the Borg Cube and right before the ship explodes a circular pod escapes. Meanwhile, Worf is beamed up onto the enterprise from the badly damaged Defiant. The Borg Pod creates a vortex and disappears into it, and suddenly 24th Century Earth looks barren and industrial. The Borg have gone back in time to assimilate the Earth so there would be no Federation. The crew follow the Borg to prevent this.

The date is April 4 2064, the day before the event known as First Contact. War has basically destroyed the world. The crew search for the man responsible for First Contact named Doctor Zefram Cochrane.

Meanwhile the borg have beamed themselves onto the Enterprise. The environmental controls are malfunctioning and many different crew members are getting assimilated. So the crew must protect Zefram Cochrane while and keep their ship from getting taken over by the Borg.

Star Trek - First Contact is considered one of the better films of the franchise. It is the second outing of the Next Generation crew on the big screen. There are many dramatic moments as well as funny moments as the crew put up with Zefram Cochrane's antics.

Picture

The DVD presents Star Trek - First Contact in its original theatrical 2.35:1 anamorphic Panavision aspect ratio. The picture is sharp and vivid. Great color reproduction, natural flesh tones, vivid colors, and deep black levels.

Sound

The DVD is mixed in Dolby 5.1 which is almost as dynamic as the theatrical soundtrack. The surrounds are active and the LFE is put to good use. The DVD also includes a DTS soundtrack which is better in every way.

Extras

Disc one has two audio commentary tracks, one for director Jonathan Frakes and the other for screenwriters, Brannon Braga and Ronald Moore. Disc two features documentaries, and interviews detailing various aspects of the production of this film. The extras conlude with the teasers and theatrical trailers for this film that were taken directly from the earlier bare bones release of this film.
