still turning point
57Sufis
One whirl at a time,
A spinning top or a carousel with painted horses
Gaily rising and lunging to circles of circus
Music, dervishes of desire dancing,
Around the still point of the turning world,
Centered centripetal swing of the merry-go-round.
It cannot hold, It can not hold.
And yet, Focus, Clear Mind on the Don’t Know
Point at the unmoving center of the turning world,
One single heart quiet heart
To stop the buzz, the twitter, the distraction
Of self-admiration and pleas for external affirmation.
Men in long white skirts,
Spinning on Gold Leaf, formal, with tilted hats
And straight backs,
Dancing with God to the glory of God,
Around the still point.
The origin of this ecstasy is grief
Beyond pain, sorrow and loss
We learn to dance purely, effortlessly
Under the stars, among the stars (not celebrities)
But those celestial lights whose perfect attention,
Attend with perfect grace.
