Old Classic Hot Rods Street Rods Resto Mods And Custom Cars

It all begins way back before World War II. Teenagers and young adults addicted to customizing cars and the need for speed, were racing Model T Fords in the Southern California dry lake beds of Harper, Muroc, and El Mirage and they were also racing down the streets of Los Angeles way back in the 1920s. El Mirage racing has continued to this very day.

These were the original Speed junkies, who should not be confused with the modern day Harley Speed Junkies, who have somewhat hijacked the term. These original speed junkies would hop into their Rods in Los Angeles and drive two or three hours to the dry lake beds.

The place of choice for drag races were the back streets in Town. The dry lake beds became popular drag strips because of all the flack the rodders were getting from the local Police and citizens. I can still remember dragging down the main street of Palmdale back in the 70's. As the town grew, we had to move over to the local drag strip in Littlerock.

My Dad had a great story he always told about his first encounter with a Hot Rod. When he was young, he lived a few miles from town. One day as he was walking to town, a souped up Model T Hot Rod pulled over and the driver asked him if he wanted a ride. My Dad said, sure, and off they sped.

Up until this event my Father had never been in a vehicle that topped the speed of 30 miles per hour. As they drove on, the old Vintage Model T Hot Rod was increasing in speed. My Dad said that when the car hit 40 miles an hour, he told the driver to slow down, the driver just smiled and continued on.

When the Hotrod neared 50 miles an hour, Dad told the mad man to pull over and let him out, he didn't. Finally, at about 65 miles per hour, Dad reached up with his fist and knocked out the drivers side windshield. The hot rodder pulled over cussing, let Dad out, and sped off into the sunset.

What really got me hooked on speed and Hot Rods was a little book I stumbled upon in my local Library. As I read the book, I came across the name, Roger Coburn, this just happened to be my Uncles name. As I read on, sure enough, it was my Uncle in Bakersfield.

The book told the history of my Uncles drag racing and all the records he had set. This boy was bad, and I was so busy being a teenager, I had never noticed, not until I read this little old Hot Rod Book.

If the truth be known, this tinkering with hot rods is either an illness, or an addiction. I have even gone so far as to rip out the engine and transmission from a Chevy and replace them with Ford parts.

The Ford engine had more horse power, and the Chevy tranny was an automatic. The Ford had a four speed tranny. You all know what I had to go through to make this work, Man, what a job. It was my first experience with cutting a drive shaft, I liked to never got the thing balanced.

Once the project was completed though, it was a screamer. After replacing the transmission several times, I eventually moved on to other projects.
