stupid travel mistakes I made

I love traveling, but there are many mistakes that can happen when you are about to travel. The following are true mistakes I made. Follow my advice and it will save you time, money and a big headache.

Make sure you book under your legal name.

My wife has an American name and Korean name. When I booked her airline ticket, I used her American name, which was a BIG mistake since all her legal documents (drivers license, passport) were under her Korean name. All my efforts to convince the United Airlines receptionist were to no avail. Receipts and her Costco card were not taken. Only after pleading with the receptionist, talking to her supervisor and paying a $200 fee was I allowed to redo the ticket.

Use promotional codes when booking online

If you plan to book online in the big three online booking sites: travelocity, expedia, and orbitz then you should definitely look for promotional codes to help you save some money. Orbitz promotional codes can help you save sometimes up to $200 or $300 bucks. Expedia also offers some expedia coupon codes, however, they mostly have unique online deals. With travelocity promotional codes you can save $50-$200 off your next vacation. Who doesn't love a little extra money for travel.

Planning to reschedule to go on an earlier flight? Don't do it.

This is a big big mistake. I paid $600 to have my airline tickets rescheduled for an earlier flight. Little did I know about just going to the airlines directly and getting on the waiting list of an earlier flight. If you don't mind the hassle of going to the airport and maybe not getting in, then you should go on an earlier flight and join the waiting list. Chances are good that you will get in and in the process you could save hundreds of dollars just by following my tip. To improve your chances of getting in an earlier flight you can call and ask the airlines when the least booked flight is. Once you know you can go there and most likely you will be able to get in.

Label your luggage

Once I borrowed a friends luggage and being the absent minded individual that I am sometimes, didn't pay too much attention to the luggage I borrowed. Big big mistake. Once I arrived at my destination I was totally discombobulated on which luggage belonged to me. Of course, I had a small recollection of it but there were so many luggages that looked alike. If you want to avoid the hassle that I had to go through make sure you decorate your luggage with colorful strings, add stickers, draw pictures, write your name or do something to make sure you can recognize it. Remember, this is not just for you: it can also help others who have luggage made by the same manufacturer to not be confused as well. A lot of airports don't check individuals to see if they have taken their correct luggage.

Weigh your luggage and know how heavy it can be

Yes, I made this stupid mistake too. I made my luggage above the weight limit. Know what the carry on an checked luggage limits are for your airline. It usually is 50 lbs for checked luggage and 40 lbs for carry on but don't take my word for it. You should see if your airline has different limits. Trust me, it's not fun bribing a fellow passenger to take your bowling ball for you.

I hope my article can help you save some money and pain. If you want to save money when you shop online you can go to couponloco.com. I offer petco coupons, wine.com coupon codes and many more.

Good advice - the full legal name gets a lot of people- that's the name on the passport not any other name! Note the weight limits for outside the North America is 20kg per person in economy
