There is no other day of the year upon which men and women go out of their way to express their love for one another more so than on St Valentine's Day. But how did it all start? Who was St Valentine and why is he remembered to this day in such a fashion? Shall we explore the annals of history a little before we proceed any further?

Who was St Valentine?
The Valentine to whom we refer was a priest in the far flung days of the Roman Empire, under the reign of Claudius II. When Claudius decided that his subjects' family commitments were interfering to an unacceptable extent with his army recruitment programme, he decided to take the extreme step of annulling all existing marriages and forbidding any more to take place. Sympathetic to the cause of young lovers, Valentine continued to marry them in secret until - perhaps inevitably - in the year 269AD he was caught.
Valentine's punishment was harsh in the extreme. He was sentenced to be stoned to death and subsequently beheaded on the 14th February. While awaiting execution, he befriended the young daughter of his jailer and on the morning of his death, left her a note thanking her for her friendship and signing it, "From Your Valentine."
What is the right gift for Valentine's Day?
Choosing the right gift for that special someone is perhaps even more difficult than choosing one for Christmas or a birthday. It has to almost speak and send a certain message to that favoured person as regards the intimate feelings of the giver. So how do we achieve that?
Money is absolutely not the issue. A hugely expensive gift can effectively be as meaningless as one that cost virtually nothing. The answer is basically to give a present that shows you put some thought in to it, or perhaps even made yourself. This will mean far more to the average recipient than something you may even have sent someone else to buy on your behalf!
Be creative. Think about what the person really likes and is most likely to appreciate. If you know them as well as you think or hope you do, they should consequently be all the more delighted...
