There are a large number of schools across the country that offer surgical tech training. The best of these surgical tech schools are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP). CAAHEP has a listing on their website of the 449 schools who have accredited programs in this field. This would be a good place to go in your search for a surgical tech program, as you can find out which programs are located near you and then compare them to see which would work out the best for you.

Most states have CAAHEP accredited surgical tech schools, including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Some of these states have more accredited programs available than others, but if there aren't many programs near you there are other options.

For those who do not live near one of the accredited surgical tech schools, there are eight accredited schools that offer online or distance options. These are the Gulf Coast Community College in Florida, Kirkwood Community College in Iowa, Spencerian College in Kentucky, Southeast Community College in Nebraska, Canadian Valley Technology Center in Oklahoma, Lockhaven University of Pennsylvania, Presentation College in South Dakota, and Laramie County Community College in Wyoming. If you are interested in an online program check these out to see which would best meet your needs.

There are other schools around that offer surgical technician training, but if they are not accredited you will not get as good an education to help prepare you for your career. You will also have a harder time becoming certified, and most employers prefer to hire certified surgical techs whenever possible. It would probably be better to complete an accredited online program than a classroom based program that is not accredited.

All of the accredited surgical tech schools have programs that take between 9 and 24 months to complete, which result in certificates, diplomas, or associate's degrees, depending on the type and length of the program. Be sure to look around at all of your options and compare the programs, as the costs can vary greatly and you don't want to have to pay any more than necessary.
