What is Svchost?

Svchost.exe is a legitimate Windows XP, 2003 and 2000 process. It is a component which is required and essential for the smooth running of the operating system. It is also normal to have various instances of the same process running at the same time in the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del). If you are experiencing problems with svchost.exe, your system might be infected.

Computer Security and Suggestions

If you are running any of the operating systems listed above, don't delete svchost.exe otherwise you will crash your Windows. On Windows Me, 98 and 95 this process should not exist in the first place. If you suspect something is wrong with this Windows process, try the following:

  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Select Network Connections.
  • Choose your Connection Type.
  • Right click, select Properties.
  • Check Advanced Tab.
  • Make sure 'Protect my computer and network from internet' is checked.
  • Make sure you have the latest service packs installed.
  • Scan your computer for viruses and spyware.
