Many people experience sweaty armpits, or an overall increase in sweating, when they're involved in activities that cause a high level of physical simulation or overheating. Sweating can also be attributed to certain climates and temperature conditions. However, if you experience sweaty armpits at all times of the year and it's not really dependent on your level of physical activity, you may indeed be suffering from hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. This condition typically appears about the same time as puberty and could continue indefinitely. Because this type of sweating is not dependent upon climate or physical conditions, it is usually caused by factors such as:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Excessive stimulation of the nervous system
  • Certain (typically spicy) food items

While it may be a simple fix to avoid foods that can trigger excessive sweating - such as onions and garlic; spicier herbs; and beverages such as coffee and alcohol - these steps will not help people from whom sweating is not dependent upon the foods they ingest. The first place to start when it comes to how to stop sweating is with topical treatments - such as deodorants and antiperspirants. Your best bet at preventing excessively sweaty armpits is to choose deodorant that has a high concentration of aluminum chloride. Typically, most over the counter antiperspirants available in drug stores will not have more than 12% aluminum chloride in their respective formulations. However for many people, a deodorant with this level of aluminum chloride may be highly effective in preventing underarm sweating completely.

For those who need more wetness protection, higher concentration antiperspirants may be available from your doctor or dermatologist. There are also several prescription drugs that can reduce or eliminate hyperhidrosis; additionally, recurring injections can be given by your doctor to completely disable your sweat glands. These injections are FDA approved and are safe because they are specifically placed to eliminate underarm sweating while allowing for your sweat glands to function as normal on the other essential parts of your body.

From slightly adjusting your diet; to using quality deodorants and antiperspirants; and being mindful of wearing lightweight clothing that will help to keep your skin cool instead of absorbing body heat; these tips will provide you with the basis for learning how to stop sweating.  With these methods, may be able to reduce or possibly eliminating your excessive underarm sweating and sweaty armpits altogether!
