- Rs 11 crore required for restoration work on NMRPress Trust of India12 hours ago
Coimbatore, Nov 14 (PTI) With the 38 km stretch of the world heritage Nilgiris Mountain Railway between Kallar and Ooty badly affected due to the recent landslips and breaches following heavy rains, at least Rs 11 crore would be required to put back on track the famous tourist spot, a recent study said.
- Widening of roads may have caused Ooty landslidesNDTV4 days ago
Indiscriminate widening of roads along the mountain side could have led to the unprecedented landslides in the Nilgiris that have killed 43 people. Authorities, including the Union IT Minister A Raja, who is the MP from Nilgiris, have not ruled this out and have asked for an investigation.
MUDUMALAI WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES
This is one of India's finest sanctuaries and is simply reachable from Ooty. Two other sanctuaries, Bandipur in Karnataka and Wynad in Kerala are next to Mudumalai. Nature has been generous in bestowing the sanctuary with thickly wooded hills, plateaus, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, streams and wetland. The varied vegetation and topography meet the ecological necessities of several species inhabiting the sanctuary. Driving in the forest departments van or jeep or riding on an elephant are the best way of visiting the sanctuary. This sanctuary is spread out over 320 sq km and is at an altitude of 885meters. Buses plying between Mysore and Ooty stop at three points in the sanctuary.
Mudumalai is the one place where a tourist can view with comparative ease a single herd of more than 100 spotted deer or 70 to 80 gaurs. There are elephants, giant Malabar squirrels, thousands of butterflies, primitive mammals such as the scaly ant-eater, or pangolin, wild dogs etc.

Easy to forget that India has such interesting wildlife, not something that is normally promoted in relation to India which is odd because in truth it is probably on a par with Africa.
