ESL: English as a Second Language

EFL: English as a Foreign Language

Teaching English, in itself, is rewarding enough, especially if you are teaching something that will equip your students with some sort of skill to help them advance themselves into the future. Let’s face it, most of the things we learned in school really could not be applied to the real world once we grew up.

What we do get to use are the practical lessons learned outside the four walls of the classroom. While it's true that we learn the technicalities of being a doctor or an engineer from our teachers, applying them in real life requires more than just the technical terms but, more appropriately, in conjunction with the practical side of life.

Why Learn English

Whether you are a native Japanese, Chinese, Korean or from another non-native English speaker country, the fact is that English is the international language when conducting business outside of your local market. Many career-driven individuals realise that the technical or management skills of your field are just not enough to reach and expand into more global markets.

The other big need to learn English may not be so obvious, and that is to travel to abroad. Non-native English speakers are at a huge disadvantage when travelling abroad, whether for business or pleasure. That's why many opt for tour groups simply because they cannot communicate in the international language of English.

Now you can start to see why a TEFL teacher comes in handy. While others may argue that teaching English as a foreign language is not as important as teaching nuclear science, when you immerse yourself in the midst of a culture struggling to comprehend what half of the world is saying, you will understand that there is a global need for English to be included in every student’s curriculum.

Lately, however, countries, even the ones that used to be strict about patronizing only their native dialects, have slowly opened themselves and have recognized the importance of learning how to speak the English language. This is why there is now an increasing demand for English teachers, especially in an economy that partly thrives on the call-center industry.

Benefits of Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Being a TEFL teacher, the rewards could be more personal than you probably thought at first. While the travel opportunities, better than average monetary compensation and even the cultural experiences are reasons enough to plunge into the teaching vocation, there is nothing more rewarding than finally being able to converse with your students in conversational English.

Seeing your students’ enjoyment at finally being able to confidently speak the language and hearing them profusely thank you over and over again for helping them overcome the language barrier compare to no other reward.

True indeed that "English is the international language when conducting business outside of your local market". And English is the language of money. Learning English is fun it unites people from different nationalities.

Very good points on the blog. One area we have noted is that expats don't look after their kids if they are not in international schools with their reading so also need to teach their own children.

The Honduras video looks cool.
