Teaching English in Japan
Japan is one of the best countries to visit if you are planning on getting a teaching job and staying abroad for a while. Whilst living conditions may not be the same as you're used to back home, you needn't worry because, given a little time, you'll have adjusted to your new environment.
Before you go any further though, be sure to do a thorough background check, so you won’t be too shocked with the culture change. You'll find that Japan has a rich economy with a few rules you may not be used to.
A Typical Day
A typical day for an English teacher in Japan usually starts in the afternoons when students start pouring in after their regular classes have finished for the day. You may also have evening classes in your schedule for adults who come in after work.
Usually, English teachers carry a workload of 20 to 25 contact teaching hours on a weekly basis, depending on the influx of students in your language school. Each class may run from about an hour to two hours, also depending on your students’ courses.
There may be instances when you will be approached for private lessons, which could pay a little more. However, if you're a newbie, it's best to stick with your regular classes until you know your way around, and you’ve bridged the language barrier.
Weekends are usually free, and here, you can do a little exploring on your own.
Food and Transportation
The best way to get around Japan is by doing what everyone else is doing, riding their bikes and scooters. The streets are small, so it is more convenient to either walk or take your bike instead of driving. Most employers will assist with accommodation or provide a system where you move into the outgoing teacher's apartment.
You may have a bit of problem getting used to their food if your typical diet has always consisted of greasy burgers and fries. I was shocked the first time I arrived to Japan and my breakfast consisted of cold fish, miso soup, lettuce and rice with a sour plum in it. Say goodbye to your favourite cereals, and welcome the typical Japanese breakfast.
Adapting to their lifestyle can be a little frustrating at first, especially with the comforts you’ve been so used to back home, but once you get the hang of it, you will have mastered the art of efficiency and find that Japan is an enjoyable place to live in.
