Team building is very important when you are in a management position. As we have seen in all sporting competitions, the team with the best players does not always win. This principle is the same in business. If you can formulate a powerful team, it is going to help your company be more successful.
Here are a few steps to get you started with building a functional team:
1. Team building starts off with Leadership Training.
- If you expect to have a successful team at any level you must have strong leadership. Most people are not born with leadership qualities and need good training to learn these skills. There are a variety of coaching programs to help with this step. Many companies spend large amounts of money to train leaders. If you have leadership experience, it is going to make you more valuable in the work place. If you have not had any leadership possibilities, you may want to join some kind of sporting team. This will give you opportunities to work with other people and learn to take charge.
2. Practice makes perfect
- Your business team is not going to pick up on how to work together the first week. This too is like a sporting squad. In athletics, teams will practice for months before they can function as one unit. Business is the same. Your team needs time to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. The only way you are going to get this experience is through practice. It is important to actively implement the training you get from the leaders in the company. This will help you improve and work as one.
3. Always strive to get better
- After your company starts to improve don't stop there. Keep implementing new programs and incentives to keep people motivated. Even when you think your employees are performing good there is always room for improvement. This will help your team stay sharp. There are a variety of different incentivizes you can use to motivate your team. Be creative when thinking of new programs.
I can add my own experience of how team building can affect your business. I have had my own production company for the last few years. If you re not familiar with how a production company does business, I'll give you the basic run down. We would rent out a venue, and then promote the party with thousands of flyers. You charge 7 dollars at the door and throw a huge party. Anyway, for years my partner and I would hand out all the flyers by ourselves. When you are handing out 10,000 flyers it could take up to a month to get the work done. After a while we got smart and thought there had to be a better way. This is when we took the approach of team building. Its not like this took place in the boardroom but the concept is the same. We motivated our employees with special benefits and led by example. Even when we were making thousand of dollars from each event we strived to get better. I learned that team building is important in many different types of business. In the future, when I am in the boardroom, I am going use the skills I learned from my production company.
Implementing these three simple steps into your company will give you a higher rate of productivity that will transfer into larger revenues.

Nice article. I think you are right in your view on team building. Maybe it is nice to put one extra thing here. That is that team building is also about engaging all the individuals in a team and not just having that 'umbrella' look while trying to improve the whole team. It is a nice subject adding value to some of my articles. I am thinking about writing about teams as well. Good Job!
